Juggling politics, boxing and singing, powerhouse Pacquiao tells fans not to worry – he’s ready for Margarito

by Chris Cozzone

Crooning a tune with Will Farrell on late night TV, jet-setting out of fight camp to plug fellow politician Harry Reid and reports of less-than-perfect training have more than one sports scribe asking the question, “Could this be the fight it all catches up to Manny Pacquiao?”

Could Antonio Margarito be the one who shuts down the decade’s greatest fighter?

For those who thought booking a concert after a scheduled 12-rounder with Miguel Cotto was crazy; the master of multitasking, Congressman Manny Pacquiao, seven-division world champion, singer, actor and humanitarian, has little to say but, “Don’t worry ‘bout it.”

More concerned about putting on a good fight for the 60,000 expected to hit the Dallas Cowboys stadium on the 13th, or the millions shelling out the $54.95 price tag, Pacquiao is telling his fans to chill.

“There is nothing to worry about,” says Pacquiao. “I am ready. I’m excited for the fight on the 13th so tell the fans there is nothing to worry about me.”

Worry? Why would anyone worry about Pacquiao? Never mind the distractions Pacquiao continues to juggle with surprising ease, the other factor to consider is one Antonio Margarito, by far, in the best physical shape of his career, hungry for redemption and glory, and, also, by far, the biggest opponent Pacquiao has ever faced.

“The bigger he is, the more he weighs, the better off we are,” says trainer Freddie Roach, who may be even more maddening than his fighter, with their madcap rendition of Mad magazine’s “What, me worry?”

“Size doesn’t win fights – speed does.”

Though Roach has talked about the current fight camp being his worst, he grades it a “B” to the former “A” rated camps. Question is: Will a B-grade Pacquiao be enough to beat what appears to be an A-grade Margarito?

“I don’t think this will be a difficult fight at all,” Roach goes on. “I think Manny will stop him, with punches and combinations he doesn’t see. He’ll break him down in eight or nine rounds, I think.

“Margarito makes too many mistakes to beat us. He’s got bad habits and we’ll take advantage of all of them.”

Pacquiao’s take, on Margarito’s hunger and size?

“Margarito is coming to win this fight,” Pacquiao admits. “My main concern is what excitement we can give to the people who are going to watch. I am hoping that we can give a good fight and make people happy.”
