Margarito aims to silence Pacquiao on Nov. 13

by Chris Cozzone

“All I can tell you is, he’s a better boxer than a singer,” is Antonio Margarito’s take on Manny Pacquiao, the singer.

“He should stick to boxing.”

On Nov. 13, however, Margarito won’t be facing Pacquiao the singer, or Pacquiao the politician, for that matter -- he’ll be up against the man most consider the greatest boxer of this era.

But that fact does not escape Pacman’s would-be executioner, either.

“You have to admire him,” Margarito says. “He keeps all that power and goes up in weight – he’s a great boxer.

“I couldn’t tell you anyone who comes close to his style. I’ve never fought anyone like that. He’s a fast guy but also a small guy. I never consider I have advantages over him. But I can’t wait to get into the ring and see what we do against each other.”

Coming off his controversial suspension for tampered handwraps, a TKO loss to “Sugar” Shane Mosley and a comeback win over Roberto Garcia, earlier this year, that Margarito should consider himself fortunate to net the greatest opportunity of his career, is not overlooked.

“I know it’s a great opportunity,” says Margarito. “And I will take full advantage of it. I know how hard it’s been to make and I thank God it’s finally here.”

Though he’s not bragging or predicting he’ll knock Pacquiao out, Margarito says fans can expect to see him in the greatest performance of his career on Nov. 13.

“That’s what I’m looking forward to doing,” says Margarito. “I had a great camp and I can’t wait to show everyone that I belong at this level.

“Boxing is one of those books that is continually written. Nothing is set in stone. You just go in and fight – in life, and in boxing.”

Margarito’s biggest fight, to date, has actually been battling for his right to fight, following the controversial handwraps bust that had former trainer Javier Capetillo taking the fall.

“I try not to dwell on the negative,” says Margarito, who’s trained under Robert Garcia for this fight.

“I know people ask questions, and that I have to answer. I have no problem with that. But right now, I just concentrate on the fight. Everything is in the past.”
