Las Vegas - At the MGM Grand, Juan Manuel Lopez (30-0, 27KOs) retained his WBO featherweight title with a stoppage of two-division champion Rafael Marquez (39-6, 35KOs) after eight rounds of exciting action. Marquez seemed to suffer a shoulder injury and could not continue after eight rounds, but Lopez was really coming on in the last few rounds.
Lopez was hyped as the quicker guy, but it was Marquez who displayed the faster hands in the first. He was coming in and out with fast shots. Lopez was using his jab to set things up. He ended the round with flurry to trap Marquez in the corner. Lopez began to let his hands go in the second. He appeared to be too strong for Marquez, at least early on. Marquez closed the second with a left hand. Marquez was really connecting well with counter left hands in the third, testing the jaw of Juanma.
Lopez started the fourth round by daring Marquez to go to war. They were trading punches and Marquez rocked Lopez with a counter hook. Marquez began to work Lopez over with punches. A frustrated Lopez hit Marquez as referee Tony Weeks broke them apart from a clinch. Weeks took away a point for the roughouse tactics by Lopez.
The counter hook of Marquez continued to work in the fifth. Lopez was able to get in a few good punches by getting around the jab of Marquez with overhand shots. Lopez came out very strong in the sixth by switching up his punches and using the straight left hand to score. The seventh round was all-Lopez, with Marquez taking a decent beating against the ropes in the final minute. The eight was an inside war with Lopez pushing forward. They traded a lot of punches in the final minute. Lopez was landing the harder blows.
Marquez was unable to come out for round nine and the fight was stopped. The Marquez corner said their fighter suffered a shoulder injury.

I gave Rafael Marquez and "outside chance" of winning and it almost came in the 4th round. For some unknown reason, the referee interfered and kept the two away from each other for more than 20 seconds - enough time for JuanMa to recover. That prevented Marquez for follow up attack. Eventually, Lopez's stamina and power took out the sail of Marquez. In defending against Lopez's power punches, he injured his shoulder. It was a shame. It was one heck of a fight. I think that had the fight continued and the referee did not interfere, there was a good chance for the Marquez attack to have succeeded.

I saw an old marquez getting exhausted and it was a matter of a round or two of pressure and he would of been koed.I will give marquez the benefit of a bad shoulder but if he was well and the fight continued my opinion would still be the same. That said I wouldnt mind seeing a rematch. This was a great fight.

Youth always has the upper hand in boxing which is why I gave Marquez that slim "outside chance" of winning. He fought with a lot of heart and his skills showed when he nailed Lopez. On the judges cards, i am sure Lopez had the edge. Without the referee's interference (pure semantics now) could the result been different? (He gave Lopez time to recover and prevented Marquez's attack.)

This fight wasn't in PR, it was in Vegas. Juan just was to much for Marquez,to young, to fast, to strong and to smart. All Marquez did was put his head down and get hit on back of the head. Then Juan's corner told him to get close and use shorter punches and uppercuts and it was all over. Marquez was a good fighter but Juanma is much better than any Mexican fighter in that division, I think better than any one in the division. Look out cause he can go up in weight and give hell to a lot of good fighters in other divisions. JMO

Marquez big brother J.M Marquez is interested in defending his tittle against Juanma Lopez in a catch weight of 130pounds. This will be a better fight. If the money is good, we'll be seeing this event very soon. Juanma will win this one also.

I saw the fight.Marquez come out with big guns and ran out of steam.I also think in the fight with Vasquez the same thing would've happend as well if wasn't for the headbut..Jmo peace..

Totally agree with you guys. Marquez does have a history of running out of gas.... even when he was young. He did give it his best, but would have gotten knocked out by Lopez. Too young and strong. Plus did you see the size difference? Lopez must have put on 15 pounds after the weigh in. While Marquez had to go up in weight.
However,,, I will say this, I have seen Lopez 3 times now. He does have a glaring weakness. His jaw. He does not take a punch well.
If he goes up in weight and gets hit by bigger boys, he is not going to fare too well. Only way is for him to knock them out before they hit him.
Marquez is small and had him wobbly about 3 times.
But it was an excellent fight.
Look for Manny to win within 4 rounds. Margarito is used up. Mosley just about killed him. He beat Cotto, but took some huge punches.
Manny easy.
Just my opinion.

Nice post man!Lopez did take a few to the jaw and thats definately a weakness for him.As far as moving up in weight probably not a good idea..Very agressive dude thou..Not much difference in age between Paquaio and Margarito but Antonio stands much taller with a huge reach advantage..Jmo amigo..

I agree with you Todd, Margaritio big and a huge punch. But he is on the comeback trail and looked awful in his first fight back. Won a decision but took some big shots again. Other guy couldnt break an egg though.
Manny is super fast, doubt Margarito can catch him.
Wish he would though, just to make the fight interesting.
Hope M does better than Hatton did!
I will be hoping for a good fight that goes into the late rounds.
