i want to get 123 deg to right looking from behind. What will the pointer in elliptical 18 by 24 read?

If you're talking about galaxy at 123W you will need a linear lnb and probably a bigger dish depending where you live.

90 degrees equals no skew, (LNB level with the horizon) 123 degrees would equal a +33 degree skew clock wise (from 90) looking from the back of the dish..

Here is a site that will give you a visual indication on the skew needed at your location.

so if the scale from left to right starts at 40 deg, skewing clockwise the pointer should stop at 57 deg???

If 40 degrees is equal to the LNB level with the ground _____-_____ then you add +33 to it rotating the dish clockwise from the backfor a total of 73 degrees.

This may help.
