From GMA NEWS: Even as he admires the toughness of Antonio Margarito, Freddie Roach can’t help but put the blame on the Mexican’s corner for the damage he suffered at the hands of Manny Pacquiao.

Roach insisted that the 12-round bout with the World Boxing Council (WBC) super-welterweight championship at stake should have already been stopped as early as the end of the eighth round and not allowed to go the full distance.

As it was, the 31-year-old Pacquiao won in convincing fashion and Margarito was beaten black and blue.

The Mexican was later rushed to the hospital and failed to attend the post-fight conference together with the rest of his team.

“He suffered too much unnecessary punishment," said Roach. “Me, I would have stopped the fight."

With Pacquiao way ahead in the judges’ scorecards by the time the eighth round ended, the celebrated trainer said it should have been stopped right at that point.

“It was just a matter of time," he said.

But trainer Robert Garcia contended that no way would the 32-year-old warrior from Tijuana, Mexico allow him to stop the fight.

“We have a warrior here and he would never let me stop the fight, “ he said.

Roach would have none of it.

“I know he’s (Margarito) a tough guy, but the cornermen are supposed to protect his fighter. I don’t know why they wouldn’t stop the fight," he said.

The latest exchange of words between the two boxing trainers came amidst allegations earlier in the day that Margarito was preparing to drink a substance, reportedly contained in a small bottle, which Roach’s representative deemed as illegal.

Billy Keine, a long-time friend of Roach, was the one who protested the move and had a heated exchange of words with Margarito’s men.

“So we called in the Commission," said Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, adding later that Margarito wasn’t allowed by the Commission to drink the substance.

"So, he didn't, and everything was handled in the proper manner. It never got into the water. That's what I was told," added Arum.

Keane was also with Roach when Garcia was hand-wrapping Margarito inside his dressing room prior to the fight.

Roach's presence in that room was made necessary by the controversy that placed Margarito in the limelight.

The Mexican was caught with loaded handwraps before his 2009 title fight with Sugar Shane Mosley, an offense that led to the revocation of his license and a one-year ban from fighting.

Roach wanted to make sure that what happened during the Shane Mosley fight woudn't be repeated, only to discover something else that could have created an even bigger controversy.

Margarito chose to fight. He has a warriors soul and pac knew this when he kept entering the ring. One day everyone will remember him for going the distance.Ecspecially Margarito..Pac was gracious in the 12th but couldnt get the KO in prevouis rounds..Did he suffer the beating due to pride in the fact he finished the fight? This is something you would have to ask a proffesional boxer..Cheers Aqua..

I predicted a 4th rd KO. It didn't happen but Manny sure fought a beautiful fight. I also think it should have been stopped, but the pride factor is hard to defeat. An unbelievable display of superior boxing skills

Totally disagree with you Todd,,, Margarito has taken many many heavy blows from Cotto, Shane knocked him out, but landed a ton of blows before they stopped the fight...
Boxing is not about who can take the most punishment, its about who is superior in the manly art of self defense.
Margarito did NOT win a round in the Assoicated Press poll and Ledderman's card. So why have him take so much punishment, especially with one eye closed. Most fighters want to continue when they are losing... but the manager and referee have to have more sense. This guy is going to end up with Parkinsons like many before him. Thats why Ali has it. Thats why the Quarry brothers died. That contributed to Floyd Pattersons death.
As a famous actor once said..."a man has to know his limitations" so true.
Margarito's limitations were reached in about the 5th round.
Referee is as much to blame as the manager and trainer.
Mark my word,,, Margarito will never be the same!
Nothing to "cheer" about... guy is probably damaged for life.

Rudee, you are absolutely right. It made no sense whatsoever for the referee and Margarito's cornermen to have allowed the fight to continue.

Manny went for the knock out during the early middle rounds and that was when the injury to his eye socket occurred. But when he did not go down and when it became very obvious that Margarito did not have any defense to Manny's attack, Manny relented.

It was obvious during the last three rounds that Manny was simply going through the motions, not really wanting to hurt his opponent seriously but making sure he did not concede points. It was then that the referee should have protected him, when the cornermen were too callous to call the shots.

What a shame! Shame on the referee. Shame on Robert Garcia!
