They are nice antennas, but you have to watch the length of the coax going to them from the router or your signal gain won’t help much.

What I do is to mount the antennas on a mast with a bi-directional signal amp (in a weather proof box) to help with the outgoing and incoming signals.

Remember this is a two way street, if your signal cant get back to the WIFI point your antennas not going to help much, the little tiny coax they supply looses a lot of signal at 2.5 GHz, with proper connectors (Reverse SMA on one end, type “N” on the other) I use RG-214 coax, it’s a bit expensive but gets the job done, I order my antennas with the type “N” connector, this way I don’t have to use an adapter which will add to the overall signal loss.

I have had success using 2 old BUD’s going from hill top to hill top over 10 miles with a 108 G signal.

Like with one of these hummers?

Using one of these and a couple of USB extension cords I mounted one in a box outside with a yagi attached, then using an old TV antenna rotor my friend could pan through the area looking for WIFI hot spots, worked great, he found about 15 (he lives in LA).

I'm a networking idiot. If I get one of these yagis with the usb connector I can find open networks in my area (tried one of those usb wifi dongles once and found 5 open networks but all weak) on my PC but how would I get the signal to my linksys router which has an internal antenna? I'm paying $40 a month for cable internet and may have to drop that soon as times are tough...

The usb version of the antenna connects to a pc that has to have a wifi card . The coax model connects to a router - the drawback being that the coax cable , as Terry indicated, can be of a short distance before you experience signal degradation . Seeing that the antenna is not small it might be an issue - this depends on where the signal is coming from .

If you want I have a spare coax yagi antenna laying around - yours for the taking ( usual terms apply .lol)

btw - 40/month is way too much , You can get it in Canada for 25 -30 /month and we usually pay much more for these things than you guys.

If you could see 5 connections with a dongle, then the yagi would pick them up nice and strong and more that likely many more..

You may find some that are not encrypted and can just connect..If they have encryption then use backtrack 4 to attack the mac addy and open them up..takes a bit of reading but worth while..

So I would need to buy a wifi card for my PC and it would then send the signal wirelessly to my Linksys wrt160 n router? Like I said this router has an internal antenna. I know $40 a month is high but in my small town it's the only choice. It's cheaper bundled with their phone service but I dropped that and am using an MJ and a nettalk duo for phone service. Also my PC is vintage 2003 compaq/hp.

I did find about 5 that were unencrypted and one about a block away is a friend that said I could "borrow" it if I wanted. His signal was too weak tho. I was able to get on the net with 2 connections but it was slow and dropped out often.

The yagi he is using has the WIFI USB interface inside it, you run it to your PC via a USB extesion cable, you dont need the router.

The stuff I use is wired via coax from the router to the booster then the antenna.

Thanks, I understand that the usb model will get internet to my PC but how then do I get the signal to my router for the wired connection to my ihub and the ethernet connected for my duo phone dongle?

Sorry,
Not a big fan of someone trying to hack into a secured system, especially one of mine.

All my systems have intruder detection software on them, they report to me (via E-mail) when an un-authorized user/intruder gets on the system, I trace them down*, put the attacker in hand cuffs.

Open WIFI hot spots is the best choice.

* Its easy with a loop antenna and some nice directional finding equipment I have laying around.

Oh well, your choice. but you can't put me or anyone else in hand cuffs if they don't use there own connection. I don't have my own..

And if your not a big fan of hacking into a secure system...then tv piracy is not for you. ;)

Thanks Dishuser, so I assume I would still need the wifi card installed in my PC?
