With his 79th birthday looming large and with 40 years on top of the boxing promotion totem pole, Bob Arum does not need to run any marketing tests or poll fight fans as to who might be the most commercial next opponent for his cash cow, Manny Pacquiao.

Arum knows, from past financial bonanzas and a few flops here and there, what sells.

And he adheres to one cardinal rule for PPV TV boxing success.

“I don't worry about who the bloggers think is the best opponent,” Arum said by telephone from Las vegas Sunday night. “I really don't care the writers say or even what the hardcore boxing followers say when it comes to this. I know we need to pick the opponent who is the most familiar to to the casual sports fan, the casual boxing fan who cannot name all the fighters.

“I did not watch the (Juan Manuel) Marquez fight as I was at a dinner party here in town. One guy there asked who was fighting on TV and somebody said, 'Juan Manuel...' So the guy says to me, 'How come you're not there at the fight, isn't he one of your fighters?' Obviously, this guy didn't know the difference between Marquez and my guy, Juan Manuel Lopez, the kid from Puerto Rico.

“It's not about Marquez's boxing ability, blah, blah, blah, it is all about the marketing of the fight.”

If you're reading between the lines here, then either Arum is already angling to knock down the Mexican counterpuncher's asking price for the trilogy bout against Megamanny or he is, indeed, more inclined to make the April or May bout with American Sugar Shane Mosley.

“The truth is, Marquez is not even a big seller in the Mexican market, certainly nothing like (Erik) Morales, (Marco Antonio) Barrera were or even anywhere near as popular as (Nov. 13 Pacman foe Antonio) Margarito. Frankly, Marquez does not compare to any of the three. I don't know it is because they were more extroverted in personality or more balls out type fighters of what.”

In what is likely to become a familiar theme, Arum bangs the drum loudly for Mosley, who turned up at Cowboys Stadium to lobby for a Pacman bout along with new adviser, the Houston-based rap music mogul James Prince.

“In the U.S., Marquez can't compare with Shane. Mosley is a crossover guy, well liked and accepted by Latinos, by white and in the African American markets. When it comes to pay per view, Marquez is only a 'B side” guy. When he fought (Juan) Diaz, that fight did absolutely no business.

“Don't forget, Mosley beat Oscar (de la Hoya) twice and had a fight with (Floyd) Mayweather. Mosley has just been on the big stage for a long, long time and people know who he is,” Arum.

What did Arum say about other Pacman foe candidates? I thought you'd never ask.

SERGIO MARTINEZ: “It was, it remains stupidity. Manny is not giving away 25 pounds to this guy. Manny weighed 144 ½ pounds the day before the Margarito fight. So let's say Manny goes into the ring and weighs about 147-148 pounds while Martinez comes in weighing 175. Manny can have those kind of fights, sure, but not if you want him to stay around a while. Margarito hurt Manny in their fight.”

ANDRE BERTO: “I envision myself being able to sell him as an opponent but, right now, nobody knows who he is.”

FLOYD MAYWEATHER: Todd (DuBoef) tried to reach out to Floyd by phone but contact could not be made. I think Floyd is having another flirtation with (Don) King which is good for me.”

Good post Ramon... thanks.
One big reason Marquez is not that popular in Mexico is,,, he never fought there after he became famous.... Berrera and Morales did.
Marquez loves the American dollar.
If he and Morales really do fight,,,, they should do it in Azteca stadium in Mexico City... it holds over 100,000, they might fill it... the Mexicans love
Eric Morales.
But,,, Marquez would beat him.
How about Berto and Mosley guys? Got cancelled once right?
Winner gets Manny.

Well,,, Morales and Marquez are both Mexicans....
They can fight there.
Erik drew close to 70 thousand last time he fought there. I imagine he
and Marquez would do much better than that.
Plus PPV,,,, they could buy Mexico.
Erik is from Tijuana. Marquez from Mexico City.

WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez is pushing very hard for a third fight with Manny Pacquiao. The three division champion from Mexico would like the fight to take place at a max catch-weight of 144-pounds. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, who promotes Pacquiao, is not going to budge on the weight. Arum, along with Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach, are taking a hard line with Pacquiao's next fight taking place at the full welterweight limit of 147-pounds.

Marquez, WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto, and former champion Shane Mosley, are the three names in the running to fight Pacquiao - if a deal can't be reached with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

"Well, there are two key things with Marquez that are important. One is their fight will be at 147 pounds. In other words, they are not going to fight at a catch weight. If they want a stipulation that Manny doesn't come into the ring weighing more than 150, that's fine. But it's stupidity to make this guy, who is the welterweight champion -- Manny -- go down to 142 or 143. Or to starve himself. The important thing is how much that they weight the night of the fight," Arum said.

"Manny, when he fought Antonio Margarito, weighed in at 144.6 pounds and came in the night of the fight at 148 pounds. That's what we're going to do. We're not interested in any kind of starving to get lower and so forth. The night of the fight, if Marquez fights Manny, Marquez will probably be the same weight as Manny. So the fact that Marquez will probably do that, we're not going to allow Marquez to make this kid [Pacquiao] think twice about what he's eating. That's No. 1. The other guys, Mosley and Berto, they're no problem. They're okay with 147, obviously."

Besides the weight, the second issue at hand is the money. When Arum tried to make a third fight with Marquez earlier this year, he says the Mexican fighter asked for a 50-50 split on the money. That will not happen, says Arum. At best, Arum is willing offer him the same amount of money that he made for last September's fight with Mayweather.

"But the second thing is, I'm interested in only two figures in the negotiations. That's all. One is, the guaranteed amount that I have to pay the fighter, and, secondly, how we measure the upside. Is it above 800,000, or is it above a million homes, and how many dollars a home over and above that threshold? Those are the only two points that I'm interested in. Period. Period. Period," Arum said.

"So, again, I know exactly what Marquez got for the Mayweather fight, alright? And he lost that fight. So, at best, he's not entitled to any more than that. Why should he get more money to fight Manny than he got to fight Mayweather? Why? So, you know, I don't need a big negotiation. And we're not going to need to negotiate with [Golden Boy CEO] Richard Schaefer or anybody like that."

"All I need is for them to send us a letter saying, 'Okay, we'll accept X amount of dollars as a guarantee, and Y dollars for the upside,' which, we know what 'X' and 'Y' were for their fight against Mayweather. So it's either a little less or the same, but not five cents more."

As BoxingScene.com had reported earlier, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. withdrew from this Saturday's fight with Pawel Wolak, scheduled to take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Nonito Donaire's bantamweight bout with former champion Wladimir Sidorenko has replaced Chavez-Wolak as the main event of Top Rank's "In Harm's Way" pay-per-view. Wolak will face Mexico's Jose Pinzon on the show.

Bob Arum, CEO for Top Rank, had planned for Chavez to fight Wolak this Saturday, and if he looked impressive, then Arum was planning to possibly match him against WBA 154-pound champion Miguel Cotto in March.

Considering the recent developments, Arum states there is no shot for Cotto-Chavez to take place in March. He wants Chavez to have a few fights at 154 before he matches him against Cotto.

"I don't think that it would be prudent at this point to put him in with Miguel until he's fought a couple of fights, at least one or ideally two, at 154-pounds. That is accurate, we are not looking towards a Miguel fight until after that happens," Arum said.

One plan that Arum is still considering is a June doubleheader with Cotto facing Antonio Margarito in a rematch and Chavez appearing in the co-feature against former champion Yuri Foreman.

Hey Ramon,,, Thanks for the post!
That sounds like a good doubleheader...
I think it would draw pretty good!
Hope Margarito isn't damaged goods... would be a good rematch.
