DiBella Says Pacquiao Should Fight Andre Berto, Says Pac-Man-Juan Manuel Marquez Is No Fair Fight At 147

By James Slater -

If reigning WBC welterweight ruler Andre Berto was in the running when it comes to the Manny Pacquiao “sweepstakes” before the sensational 1st-round win he scored this past Saturday, then the 27-year-old surely strengthened his position with the win over the previously unstopped Freddy Hernandez.

Or has Berto actually put himself at the back of the line due to looking too good and too dangerous in his latest fight? As of now, the names being mentioned for Pacquiao’s next fight are: Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez, Berto and, at the top of the list demand-wise but still having the look of an extremely hard fight to make, Floyd Mayweather Junior.. If we can rule out “Money” (and with his ongoing legal issues, it’s doubtful Mayweather will face Pac-Man in the Filipino’s next fight), we are left with a natural lightweight in Marquez, a faded welterweight in Mosley and a young, strong and fast-peaking 147-pounder in Berto.

Which fight looks to most appealing to you?

Berto’s promoter, Lou DiBella, certainly feels his fighter is more of an attractive rival for Pac-Man than either Marquez or “Sugar” Shane.

“Marquez is one of the greatest fighters who ever lived …… at 135-pounds!,” DiBella said to Yahoo Sports Monday. “You can’t argue about the guy not deserving an opportunity. But at 147 it’s not a fair fight. If Pacquiao is a welterweight then fight at welterweight.

“And honestly, I think Pacquiao-Berto is a more sellable fight than Shane. What’s the point of Shane? He lost every round against Mayweather.”

DiBella said “we won’t price ourselves out” when it comes to the possibility of Berto getting a fight with the pound-for-pound king; before adding, “but we’re not chumps.”

Top Rank’s Bob Arum will look at the options as far as Pac-Man’s next fight goes, and it will be interesting to see if he is willing to give the fight to Berto. DiBella makes lots of sense in what he says, that’s for sure; Marquez IS too small for Pacquiao now, and Mosley, well - who really wants to see the 39-year-old tackle Pac-Man?

But is Berto a big enough name yet, and would the casual fans buy a fight between he and Pacquiao? Berto has the green belt, of course, and he has been seen on some big pay-per-view cards. But what the unbeaten talent lacks is a win over a big name. Will this hold him back as far as his chances of landing the big one with Pac-Man?

Personally - though I’d love to see a Pacquiao-Marquez III, but only if it happened at a comfortable weight for “Dinamita,” say 140-pounds tops - a Pacquiao-Berto clash is a fight I’d pay to see. Berto has a lot going for him, he is a natural welterweight and he would at the least test Pacquiao more severely than Mosley would. I’m not saying Berto beats Pac-Man, but he would be no pushover either. A puffed-up Marquez and a close to shot Mosley, however, would stand next to no chance against Pacquiao.

And, as a sidebar, a Berto challenge of Pacquiao would appeal to Bernard Hopkins - who said recently that Pac-Man has been choosy about facing black fighters!

Floyd Mayweather aside, the 27-0(21) Andre Berto is the best welterweight opponent out there for Pacquiao as of now!

Excellent post! Very precise. I agree with most of it..
How come noone mentions Mayweather vs Berto?
Berto not a household name... Don't know how he would draw against
name fighters.
Manny would be a fool to come down in weight to fight someone a 3rd time.
The money is in the bigger divisions.
Marquez just looking for another payday. He is excellent. But biting off more than he could chew with the big boys.
Just look at what he did against Mayweather... nothing! He would be better off fighting foreign fighters like he did Saturday..
He would draw huge in Japan. Plus they love Mexican fighters there.

I honestly dont think he should drop down to fight Marques. Why Should he? He's the Champ...if you want the Champ you got to meet his terms... Looks at Mayweather...if Mayweather can make demands why not Manny. If Marquez is hungry enough for the fight....he'll come up to Manny's weight.

Rudeee, he is the one that beat Pacman twice. The fight against Floyd was lost but he fought like a welterweight and never went down. Although he was physically over matched.

Cotto was a champ and he went down on a catch weight to fight him. Why can't Manny go down to 140 and meet the dude that smashed his face, to settle this controversy???? He's gone make money anyway. It's easy to tell others to do something that you will not do. That is why Floyd reacted the way he did, making his own rules. JMO

I believed Cotto went down on a catch weight to fight Manny because of the money involve and for the stardom. Those boxers has their rights not to accept the catch weight if they want to because they may lose some power/energy by losing weight..

Even Mayweather can make it as an alibi not to fight Manny..JMO

I agree with you, he wanted the pay but he didn't mind trying, no matter what happened. The topic is Juan Manuel Marquez, one of the best boxers alive, if Margarito filled the Cowboys stadium with mexicans, how will it be with Marquez. Everyone that saw the fights knows that there was a bad decision taken by the judges. We are waiting for the third to see who is the better fighter. Why did you think that Floyd took on Marquez, to proof that he can beat someone that gave Pac some hell. So Pac should go back and proof himself and clear that. JMO

I would love to see Pacman against Mosley, both have very quick hands, both are naturally strong, yes Mosley did admit to taking steroids but still has fought much bigger opponents after being tested and won, look at the Mayorga fight, Mayorga out weighed him by 20 pounds and the Margarito fight. Mosley is a natural counter puncher as is Pacman. I still believe Mosley has what it takes to beat him and would honestly cheer both fighters on. Yes he lost every round against Mayweather but man he rocked him bad then it was the Mayweather express using all his natural talent to save himself.

The fights Mosley lost were against fighters who used their defensive skills and made Mosley be the agressor, perfect example was Winky Wright. Pacman is very similar in that he allows himself to be defensive till he hits his opponent with that fast left hand they then realizes man this so called little guy hits really freaking hard. How many times have we heard that about him from fighters.

Mayweather does not like to fight every minute of the round instead he does flashy combos at the end of each round to steal them, Pacman is full throttle. so I say Mosley, Berto, Mayweather who ever lets get it on but I still think Shane can beat Pacman.

Good post! Lotsa people would agree with you...
However,, Ya hafta remember, Shane is 39 years old, might be 40 before the fight would take place.
And,,,, Shane beat Margarito over a year ago.
And,,,, Has had 2 bad fights since.
Doubt that with that record and his age the fight would really draw many fans.
Again,, we are just recycling fighters.
Time for some new faces... Berto? Maybe Floyd? If he ever wants to step in the ring again..
Gotta give Floyd some credit,, no matter how we feel about him. Or his personal life.
He totally destroyed Shane and Marquez.... Marquez did not win a round,, and Shane maybe won 2 rounds then ran like a deer.
And,,, we are discussing one of the above for Manny.... what does that tell us?
Just my humble opinion gents...
