Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Pawel Wolak

“In Harm’s Way” will be televised Live on Pay-Per-View, beginning at 6 p.m. PT / 9 p.m. ET from the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif for a suggested retail price of $44.95 SD $54.95 for HD. Top-10 contender PAWEL “Raging Bull” WOLAK will be In Harm’s Way on Saturday, December 4, when he challenges undefeated World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver middleweight champion JULIO CÉSAR CHÁVEZ, Jr. in a 12-round title fight. Wolak replaces the injured Alfonso Gomez, Chávez’s original opponent, who withdrew after an MRI detected a
ligament tear in his left elbow.

Wolak (27-1, 17 KOs), from Mount Arlington, NJ, enters this fight riding a two-year, six-bout winning streak, with three of those victories coming by knockout. The combined record of the last three opponents he defeated — James Moore, Ishmail Arvin and Carlos Nascimento – had a combined record of 56-4-4 when he fought them, which translates into an impressive 88% winning percentage. His last fight, a 10-round unanimous decision victory over Moore (17-2), was fought on the historic Yuri Foreman-Miguel Cotto undercard at Yankee Stadium on June 5. He is currently world-rated No. 7 by the World Boxing Association (WBA). A former New York State middleweight champion, Wolak, 29, is known as aggressive, high-pressure style fighter who always makes for exciting fights. Trained by Tommy Brooks, Wolak, an East Coast fixture, will be making his West Coast debut when he rumbles with Chávez Jr.

The Undercard

The “In Harm’s Way” pay-per-view broadcast will also feature two-division world champion NONITO DONAIRE (24-1, 16 KOs), of General Santos City, Philippines, risking his upcoming shot at World Bantamweight Champion Fernando Montiel, in a 12-round bantamweight battle against former WBA bantamweight champion WLADIMIRO SIDORENKO (22-2-2, 7 KOs), of Energodar, Ukraine; WBC lightweight champion HUMBERTO SOTO (53-7-2, 32 KOs), of Los Mochis, México, defending his title against consensus Top-10 contender URBANO ANTILLON (28-1, 20 KOs), of Maywood, Calif.; and undefeated lightweight contender MIKEY GARCIA (23-0, 19 KOs), in a 10-round lightweight bout against OLIVIER LONTCHI (18-1-2, 8 KOs), of Montréal, Québec, Canada.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. pulls out of Saturday's fight at Anaheim

His opponent, Pawel Wolak, believes Chavez is scared, not sick. Bantamweight bout becomes the main event at the Honda Center.

Pawel Wolak leaned on the cinderblock wall and stewed.

Less than a week ago, Wolak (27-1, 17 knockouts) had leaped at the invitation to fight the popular Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in the main event of Saturday night's pay-per-view card at Anaheim's Honda Center.

"I dropped everything I was planning and said yes," said Wolak, who had trained for a mid-December bout in Brooklyn. "Three days later, they told me they wanted to change the fight weight [from 160 pounds] to 165 and I said yes again."

On Tuesday, Wolak learned he would have to make a far more brutal concession. Chavez Jr.'s handlers reported the son of the legendary Mexican fighter awoke with a 103-degree fever and had to withdraw from the bout.

Wolak is out of the main event and will fight a far lesser known opponent from Mexico, Jose Pinzon (18-1-1, 12 KOs).

To Wolak, a native of Poland who is a brick worker for Pointers Cleaners and Caulkers Union Local 1 in Long Island when he's not in training, something's amiss.

"I personally don't believe there's an illness," Wolak said in Justin Fortune's Hollywood gym. "I believe he's having a weight problem and it's a tough fight for him. I think he's scared of the loss. To fight me, you have to come into that ring in tip-top shape. He obviously isn't."

Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KOs) originally backed out of a September fight with Wolak in August over what was explained as "family issues."

This time, six days after Wolak replaced injured Chavez opponent Alfonso Gomez, Chavez trainer Freddie Roach said his boxer labored through four rounds of sparring Monday. By Tuesday morning, Chavez's flu symptoms worsened, including the high fever. Roach directed Chavez to a hospital.

"His legs stiffened up on him so much he couldn't walk," Roach said of Monday's workout. "His legs were tight as a drum. People get sick in life. As sick as he is, I can't put him in the fight. His life would be in danger."

Wolak's strength and conditioning coach Farrell Brenner, when told of the late scratch, said, "Whatever is going on is in question."

Chavez's cancellation does nothing to soften the opinions of those who believe the legendary champion's son is no more than a coddled marketing attraction whose toughness is a shell of his father's.

"Put it this way: He gets a lot more favors than I do," Wolak said. "You'll see my toughness in the fight Saturday. I'm an action fighter."

Tonight two-division world champion Nonito Donaire (24-1, 16 KOs) risks an upcoming shot at WBC bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel in a dangerous 12-round pay-per-view battle against former longtime WBA bantamweight champion Wladimir Sidorenko (22-2-2, 7 KOs) at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. Meanwhile, Montiel (43-2-2, 33 KOs) must do his part next week Eduardo Garcia (21-5-1, 9 KOs) next week in Torreon, Mexico. If both Donaire and Montiel are victorious, they have a February 19 showdown in Las Vegas already lined up.

Also, WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto (53-7-2, 32 KOs) is on a mission to show the world that he, and not countryman Juan Manuel Marquez, is the best lightweight in the world. Soto is set to defend against Urbano Antillon (28-1, 20 KOs).

Donaire says he’s not looking past tonight’s fight. “Sidorenko is a very tough guy,” said the second most popular fighter in the Philippines after Manny Pacquiao in the run up to the fight. “He is very experienced and he knows how to win, as well.

“He is there to bring his name up as well in beating me. I am really focused on this fight and ready for whatever he brings to the ring. He is a different style than I have seen. I will change my style accordingly to take advantage of my opponent. It is going to be a tough fight and one that I want to make a statement on.

“Sidorenko is a tough guy, a former champion and I have to be at my best or else if I slip I’ll never get past him and I’ll never get to Montiel. I have Montiel on the horizon if I get past this guy and that’s why I have all the motivation that I need. This is where I want to be, with Montiel and Sidorenko. He is a good fighter and it will help me be a better fighter in terms of how I deal with this guy.”

Soto, a three division world champion who will be defending his WBC lightweight belt for the third time, knows tonight’s clash against Antillon is not only an important fight, but an opportunity for fight fans to compare his performance to that of Juan Manuel Marquez last weekend.

“I prepared myself very hard to retain my championship,” said Soto. “I know that Antillon is a tough opponent. I know he wants to knock me out and I want to do the same to him. This is a chance to prove that I’m the best lightweight in the world.”

Also scheduled on tonight’s PPV telecast undefeated lightweight contender Mikey Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) faces Olivier Lontchi (18-1-2, 8 KOs) and middleweight contender Pawel Wolak (27-1, 17 KOs) goes against Jose Pinzon (19-1-1, 13 KOs). Televised bouts begin at 9PM ET/6PM PT.
