Yesterday I decided to update my Tomtom GPS. Not knowing what to really do I called Tomtom customer support for assistance. I was encouraged to purchase a map update and a quarterly map update. I didn't really want the quarterly update but was advised this was the best way to go. We started the update process which actually lasted a little over seven hours and involved three customer support reps and one supervisor. We downloaded, rebooted, formatted, updated, reset, and a lot of other things and at the end of the day my Tomtom will not work at all. I was finally told by the supervisor that I would have to buy a new Tomtom but they would refund my money for the update. The supervisor said we were dealing with electronics and nothing can be guaranteed. In my opinion, something they had me download has corrupted my Tomtom and now they will not stand behind what they screwed up. I have already sent e-mails to them but expect no help. I advise all who read this, DO NOT EVER BUY A TOMTOM. If anyone has a suggestion to help me get a free replacement please post it here.

The map is not the issue, the first map they sent me was of Guam. They said they were having problems and sometimes the map of Guam is sent. We deleted that and downloaded USA and Canada but could never get it to work. As I said, after seven hours they gave up and said go buy a new unit.

It's a Tomtom One. The customer support reps I was dealing with would only work with hooking the Tomtom One directly to the PC. I thought you could just buy a map upgrade on a SD Stick. I have no idea what they did but this thing is history now. I'm just waiting for a reply from the company but will probally never get one.
How do you like your Garmin and have you ever used a Tomtom?

the garmin has taken me to many great places all over north america. i have no problems with it even with it's original maps that came with the program 2 years ago.
great app and visuals... love it.
i've never used the tomtom but have seen it at bestbuy and such...
what would happen if you reset it back to factory default. :noidea:
I got tom tom one but never done an update at all and its very handy at night time
I would contact TomTom headquarters directly. Many times the customer service is farmed out to third parties. If that was the case that third party screwed up your GPS and should pay for the repair...

Thanks, but we went through every possible command, we formatted, restored factory settings, downloaded, updated, reset several times and still the Tomtom is dead.

My Tomtom now rests at the bottom of the Ottawa River. It took us off course many times until it got fired out the car window this summer. I'd never buy another based in the inaccuracy of data and the update difficulties.

Thanks, I'll try to do that as soon as I can find an address or phone no. I'm not sure where Hq is but the customer service center was in New York near Syracuse. Well at least it wasn't in India. <br />

I would follow JCO advice at this time and that's maybe the only way to get a replenish one.:awe:

I hate my tomtom piece of shat. It sits in my console of my truck and I quit using it.
You wanna buy a real gps, buy a Garmin or a Magellan.
TomTom is nothing but a cheap piece of garbage and their map updates are a total rip off.

Thanks, but we did the reset several times while on the line with them and nothing worked. Just as yesterday ever time it powers on it displays a blue screen with Turkish language.

TomTom Ones haves a history of bricking themselves. I've had it happen right out of the box, 1st update. Luckily store exchanged it. Current one is old and slow but works fine.

I have a TomTom One XL the I decided to update Friday for an Saturday trip.
Huge, could not get it to work after that. I had to use my cell phone as a gps. I tried everything from soft reset to hard reset to formatting the HD. What a disaster. That was three weeks ago and multiple tech. support calls. That GPS is dead, can't even get it to format, it's HD is unreadable. I will never by a TomTom again.

I have had a Tom Tom 920 for 2 1/2 years and love it. I did the quarterly map updates and everything has worked fine. I have even changed street names on it and uploaded them.
Works GREAT for ME.
I would buy another one if I needed to.

I wouldn't ;)
There are far better units out there and I would rather own a nice gold Zippo lighter then buy a cheap Bic lighter :)

I love my Garmins. Both car units and both handhelds.... Cracked maps are a lot easier to find for the Garmins too.......... LOL!!

OK everybody, Thanks to everybody that offered assistance and advice on this matter. I read all the suggestions and decided to send an e-mail to Tomtom Hq. I detailed everything that had happened over the seven hour time of trying to update my Tomtom One and explained as best as I could exactly what happened and who I thought was at fault. I sent the e-mail late Thursday evening.
Well, to my surprise, Tomtom Hq called me yesterday (Friday) and said they had reviewed my situation and were going to give me a replacement for my now dead Tomtom One. They also said it would be the next better model with all upgrades already installed. I am thankful for their decision and for all the help all the Satfix members offered.
Again, a great big thanks to all who replied and offered assistance and a special thanks to Tomtom Hq.
