My wife takes her little bimmer into the dealer to have the oil changed every 25,000 kms. In fact the tech resets the indicator for 25,000
That is full syn

on my brand new 2011 Toyota Camry they recommended to change every 10.000 miles if you use synthetic oil,I guess it will be 16.000 km
i run royal purple 5w30 synthetic in my 04 gpt comp g. i change around 10,000 km. the second last change i sent in a sample and it was still at 78% life, meaning 78% good. when i first got my gtp i was getting 17 mpg, after i started to run rp it went up to 23. And here in the cold it starts awsome.

10000km is more or less standard, but your dealer or owner's manual will have the recommended service interval for your make and model. The oil change interval also depends on your driving habits.... If you fall into the "severe service" category (city driving, towing or hauling, high altitude) you'll need to change your oil (and other fluids) more often.

with synthetic oil you will get 10,000Km no problem. i recommended castrol syntec and change it every 10,000Km but any synthetic is good.

Mobil 1 is considered the best...
i change mine at 7,000KM mostly city driving... i have 350,000KM on my truck and it still purrs like a tiger.

changing synthetic every 7000 kliks seems to be a bit of overkill

city driving takes a toll on ur oil's viscosity...
the continuous starting and the driving and stopping hold more effect...
the engine reaches its normal operating temperature... but with less wind blowing at it it stays warmer than highway driving...
so... extended heat exerted on oil and prolonged heat exposure ...weakens its molecules and decreases viscosity...
thus... if i was to drive mainly highway... i would do it at 10,000KM intervals.
plus i change my own oil... cost $41 for a 5L jug plus $8 for a quality filter.
$49 is not a big wallet overkill ...

With full synthetic oils...The viscosity doesnt change ..other than heat ..which with Multigrade synthetic oils good to go . Different story with petroleum based oils .
What happen is the impurity's and carbon deposits is what really breaks down the lubrication of the oil and more so in city driving .
You could just change your oil filter in between changes .
But as spoken...some company's change at 25,000 km and newer Mercedes are at 50,000 kms.. so what does that tell ya . If they warranty your car and change at that length ..
Oil is still the cheapest insurances .

I use synthetic 15/40 in my diesel, I still change it every 5000km, although the change oil light doesn't come on till about 12000 kms
If you want to go 25000km or more that's up to you but 10000km would be my upper limit.

If the car is under warranty, go by the book.... If you do it yourself, keep the receipt and write down the mileage. I would also use the oil recommended by the manufacturer, if one is specified. Most will recommend Mobil 1.
If you're curious about the condition of the old oil, you can send a sample to a lab for analysis, depending on how broken down the old oil is, you could possibly extend your interval, or you might have to change more often.

Diesel is different from gas...as more suet are contaminating the oil ..and some burning of the oil .
I change mine early too .

First allow me to state that I have a Certificate in Diesel Technology, and have studied Fuels, Lubricants, and Coolants. For quite some time after reading, and following the thread, I was beginning to seriously consider extending my maintenance intervals as this thread would indicate past the normal 3,000 mile oil change using Synthetic oil. However, there are other factors that one must consider.
People have advised me that using a certain type of oil would cause their engine to have a lot of sludge in it. And, realizing that oil 'never' wears out. After all, that, is why they recycle oil. The oil does not 'wear' out! The package that goes in it does! Normally, one must consider the miles between oil changes, and 'the time'. I like to change my oil between (3) three, to (5) five thousand miles, or, every (3) three months, whichever comes first, whether it is Synthetic oil or not.
The reason being that the time interval is so important is: The anti-corrosive inhibitors that is a part of 'the package' that goes into the oil does 'wear out'. Once the can is opened, and placed in the motor, then, the factor of the condensation causing the oil from being exposed to the warm, and cool temperatures will break down the anti-corrosive inhibitor. Thus, someone will say after allowing their motor to have oil remain in for a lengthy 'period of time' will have something negative to say about the 'oil'.

No doubt all synthetics are light years superior to conventional, the Royal Purples and Red Lines are even better than the major brands. But they are pricey, last time I used Red Line in an SHO it was 13 bucks a quart.
The most important thing is to keep your oil filter clean. With synthetics you can easily go 2-3 filters between oil changes.

My wifes 1996 Windstar has 159000 miles on it, starts like a breeze when it's cold, and the engine is clean inside.
I give the credit to using Mobil 1 10W30, changed every 3000 miles.
5 Quarts at Wally World is only $26.00, so I couldn't care less if it's overkill:no:

Go to Amsoil site and have a read. 25,000 miles between oil changes. Their filters are rated the same. This is what I use.

Ditto on that one Montanaman! Mobil 1 is all I use too, change it every 5000 kms, It's cheap insurance for 40 bucks or so.
