Basically, routers get entire networks onto another network. In this case, a router would get your network onto the internet. An access point sits on a network, and simply grants wireless access to wireless devices. Routers do all the magic with IP addresses, port forwarding, content filtering, access restrictions, on and on and on. Access points don't do much, if any, of this type of work.
So, you probably need to use some different hardware:
