OK all you networking Gurus I need some help.

Installed a new PC running Windows 7 Ultimate into the network, and have a few connection problems.

I can get it to see the network work group, I can ping all the PC’s, the router and server but can share anything at the other PC’s, the others are all running XP pro with service pack 3, the server is running small business server 2003 with all service packs, they all can see each other and share all files between them just fine, the new one can be pinged from all.

I have looked and looked on all the internet sites for how to get the new one to see the workgroup but nothing works.:comfort1:

This is going to be the new flagship PC in the new computer lab, I need to see the others to look at files and receive video back from them to the new one.

All advice will be warmly accepted and appreciated.

Usually if you can ping it you can log onto it for sharing by putting the ip in ex: \\:192.168.xxx.xxx Then after the address with the correct name will show up in connections, but not always and you can put a shortcut somewhere for it.

This is just from me working with xp- never tried 7 on any of my pcs- but have tried it a few times lol'ol

All the PC's running XP pro work great, the new one came with Windows 7 Ultimate, I like the Ultimate platform, I might upgrade everything to it. (If I get the networking communication fixed)

All i can think of is do you have a private instead of public setup and go to advanced sharing and see if you have network discovery turned on.I have 7ultimate and really like it but took a while to get my network going.

Take a look at that article... Hopefully it's some help... Windows 7 is a little picky when it comes to file sharing. Do you have internet access on the 7 machine?

Yup have internet, I can also see and access the router, but the W7 PC wont see the work group that all the other PC's are on, all it looks for is the home group, I have to read up to see where to access the name of that group, I have a suspicion that I may need to upgrade to Ip6 on the other PC's.

I will read that article, hope it gives me an idea on what is going on.

You're welcome Terryl.
Sorry it didn't work.

I think that this would be your best bet.You probably wouldn't have the networking communication problem if all are Win 7 pc's as you didn't have the problem with the XP pc's.

Take care.

Well that didnt work, too bad you cant just get a good PC now days with XP pro in it, I might have to go back to building my own again, I guess I got too lazy.

This should be "Plug and Play" not "Plug and Pray", oh well it will keep me busy.....

Is the 7 PC on the right subnet???

also, does the workgroup name on your Win7 PC match the one on your WinXP PCs?

Yup, I triple checked that part, all PC's in the work-group are on the same sub-net.

It does in the system settings, but on network discovery (win 7 PC) nothing of that name comes up, and none of the PC's (except the Win 7 PC) shows up in the list.

It does however find the LInkstation data back up and the files in that device and I do have access to it.

Is one of your xp computers still set up as a host or server.I would check for the xp networks name and see if it iwhat is in the win7.My win7 says local network when i go into network connections,it should at pick it up if all computers are on.You might have to go to all machine and set them with a name like homegroup especially the xp host and then to the win7 and create a new workgroup. Also mine is running on ipv4 so you don't need the ipv6 ,also win7 will work with the xp's good,it does seem to be a little harder to get it.Don't give up it took me a long time.

have you tried turning off Windows Firewall on your Windows 7 PC?

No none of the PC's are acting as a server, I do have a real server running Windows small business 2003, I cant see that ether.

Tried the home-group thing, all the XP machines work fine like that, the W7 PC still doesn't see them.

Yup did that several times during all the testing, this is turning out to be a hair puller. (hope not to loose what I have left)

More info, it is now seeing all the DN VIP receivers and the DVR, I'm going to turn on the Sony Blue Ray and see if it picks that up.

So it is seeing the other stuff on the network but it is not seeing the other PC's.

(and I have tried turning their firewalls off)

That sounds good it sounds like the router is blocking it now and you are running wireless, you might try plugging it in by cable because it should detect somthing for sure if network discovery is on.

Nope this is a hard wired system running at 1000 MBPS, (10/100/1000) all equipment (except for a couple of laptops) are hardwired.

I will double check the router. (it is being seen by the W7 PC)

The W7 is not seeing the server, so I may have to go look there also.

have you turned off/disabled any Windows services on your Win7 PC? some are necessary for File Sharing to work properly

Nope, I haven't turned anything off to do with that.

Nope, I haven't turned anything off to do with that.

so you have turned off some services, right? could very well be that one of them is tied to File Sharing and masquerading as what seems to be a non-essential service

check to make sure at least these services are running: Remote Access Auto Connection Manager, Remote Access Connection Manager, Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service, Routing And Remote Access

Another thing you could check is if small business server 2003 is compatible with win7,maybe unplug the server and see if win7 can discover anything. My linksys router had a config utility where i went and remove my security key when i changed to wireless.

I have both xp and win 7 on my home network. No server just pc's.Win 7 to Win 7 is a breeze to set up and use, however I have a difficult time sharing between xp and 7. Usually I have to use xp to send the file to 7. When I try 7 to xp I have problems and give up. both xp and 7 are the professional edition with all of the latest updates. Put 7 on one of your other machines to make sure you can do everything you want before upgrading all of them. Win 7 has a network password that xp does not use, I think that's causing your issues.

Been there done that didn't work, looking deeply into the windows network platform to see about any compatibility problems.

seen anti-virus/spyware clients block file sharing; any chance of this?

12-27-2010, 01:03 AM
OK back on this, I did check the firewalls and AV/spy-ware programs and didn't get anywhere, however I hooked up a friends laptop with Windows Vista home premium on it and the W7 PC found that one instantaneously, it looks like they at MS designed W7 to ignore the XP platform when it comes to networking, this is starting to get me fired up....:taz::beatin_horse::sickofme:

OK this is beyond weird....And into the realm of gremlins in the system…

I totally disconnected the W7 PC to install the new counter for the PC lab and upon re-connecting everything (the PC sat overnight disconnected) and powering it back up I checked the network and EVERYTHING is there…….I don’t believe it….I am totally mystified and bewildered as to why after all the trouble shooting and hair pulling it started to work…….This W7 PC is shut down at night so why didn’t it detect the other computers in the network before?????????????

And…….After about a ˝ hour I re-checked the network and the other computers in the network have disappeared, this is driving me crazy.........And I'm running out of hair......Fast.....

Gremlins in the system I guess…….

Have you changed your xp computers to homegroup instead of workgroup for a setting?
