Have you tried to re install it, sometimes it gets blocked by one the of the security measures.
Try this
click Start< All Programs< Accessories< Right Click Command Prompt and select run as Administrator. When the command prompt window opens type sfc /scannow and press enter. Have your Windows Vista CD handy in case SFC needs a file. After SFC finishes, reboot the computer and see if you can open Windows Media Player.
if still no go
Verify that you have Service Pack 2 installed, click Start< Right click My Computer and click properties. The system properties window will open and it will tell you what service pack you are running. If you don't have Service Pack 2 installed then download and install it.
It’s worth a try. Maybe updating to Service Pack 2 will solve your problem.

most 7 installs give you a media player shortcut on the taskbar . was is it there before and maybe removed by another program ? (burning software or other media player software) or did you do the install and it didnt install the media player part of it?

I thought you were running vista but have you tried to restore your computer to an erlier time just in case if there is any new software or update was installed during this time which made the disappering of the meadia player.
Also you can go to this link and install it from there:

VLC is awesome and free (no doubt about it) but if you still want Windows Media Player 12 to work in your Win7 edition try reloading it:
a) Open Control Panel -> Programs and Features.
b) Click "Turn Windows features on or off" in the left pane.
c) Expand "Media Features", uncheck "Windows Media Player". Click "Yes" to continue, and click OK to quit. Then Restart.
Note: If you turn off Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center will be turned off either. You may need to re-configure settings for Windows Media Center after re-enabling it.
d) Open "Turn Windows features on or off" again. Turn on the features "Windows Media Player" and "Windows Media Center". Restart.
e) Launch Windows Media Player, initialize the program.

what is the difference between Windows 7 N and Windows 7 KN to Windows Home Premium? It said that if I have window 7 Home Premium, no need to install it as it should be included
N is for No Default Media Player and is mainly distributed in Europe where Microsoft lost a lawsuit for anti-trust practices; part of the penalty was to stop bundling Windows Media Player with the operating system
KN I believe is for the Korean market
you would not be able to install Windows Media Player 12 on your Windows 7 Home Premium edition as it's already bundled with it; the only recourse is to reload it
