Take 9 from 6 ,10 from 9, 50 from 40 and leave 6

If the 3 men got back a dollar that made them pay $9.00 a piece.
3 X 9 = 27 plus to $2.00 the bellhop kept = 29.
Where did the other dollar go?

The trick is in the wording. Out of the initial 30;

The manager kept 25.
The bellhop kept 2.
The three men each received back 1, total refund of 3.

25 + 2 + 3 =30.
