Before a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., trainer Freddie Roach would like to see Amir Khan clean out the junior welterweight division. Khan returned on December 11 to retain his WBA 140-pound title with a unanimous twelve round decision win against mandatory Marcos Maidana.
"We need to clean that division out and then go on from there," Roach said to BoxingScene.com. "Once we beat these guys, then we can move up to 147-pounds and fight Mayweather. I've already said that I have two fighters who can beat Mayweather...Manny Pacquiao and Amir."
Khan's next bout will be a likely return to England in April. The rumored opponent is Lamont Peterson, who fought to a draw with Victor Ortiz on the Khan-Maidana undercard. After April, Khan is tentative to return to America in July. Golden Boy Promotions wants him to face the Tim Bradley-Devon Alexander unification winner in the July fight. Roach doesn't have a favorite, telling BoxingScene's Ryan Burton that he doesn't care who wins the contest.
"Who cares [who wins the fight]. I've never seen Alexander fight so that shows you how popular he is," Roach said. "The other guys slaps a little bit with the right right and he's very quick though. Bradley's a good, solid fighter, but I've never seen Alexander fight. Has he been on TV yet? I think maybe once?"
