Bantamweight Abner Mares has a lot of hope for his growing career and the state of Mexican boxing in 2011. Mares got the biggest win of his career with a twelve round decision over IBO champion Vic Darchinyan a few weeks ago. Mares broke Darchinyan's streak of Mexican victims. The boxer had beaten the likes of Cristian Mijares, Jorge Arce and Tomás Rojas.

"It was not an easy victory at all. I must admit that Darchinyan hit me like nobody else in the past, but I showed that I have heart, technique and courage," said Mares to Sal Rodriguez. "Suddenly you think of what happened during the year and I think we should celebrate my victory as Fernando Montiel beat Hozumi Hasegawa and Giovanni Segura beat Ivan Calderon."

Mares will now move forward in Showtime's bantamweight tournament to face IBF champion Joseph Agbeko in the finals. He wants to be impressive to force the issue of fighting the winner of Fernando Montiel vs. Nonito Donaire, which takes place on February 19.

"In the bantamweight tournament final, I'll be facing Joseph Agbeko. It will not be an easy fight, and although I know that I'm not favorite - I'll create another surprise and convince people that I can face the winner of Fernando Montiel and Nonito Donaire," Mares said.
