The first UFC card of the new year will go down as planned Saturday, as all 22 fighters set to compete at UFC 125 made weight during the official weigh-ins Friday in Las Vegas.
A lightweight title bout between defending champion Frankie Edgar (13-1) and Gray Maynard (10-0) will serve as the night's main event. The two fought previously in 2008, with Maynard coming away with a unanimous decision.
Although Maynard has been perfect since, Edgar beat him in the race to the title, lifting the belt from B.J. Penn in April by unanimous decision.
Both guys weighed-in right at 155 pounds for the bout and both kept his words short Friday.
"I'm going to walk away with revenge and a win," said Edgar. "Can't beat it."
Maynard was equally short, simply stating that Saturday would, "go down with Gray with the win."
In the co-main event, Chris Leben (25-6) looks to post his fourth win in a row over fellow middleweight Brian Stann (9-3). Leben made UFC history in 2010, becoming the first fighter in company history to record two wins in a span of two weeks. Both guys weighed-in at the limit of 186 pounds.
A number of former and current mixed martial arts champions showed their support for teammates by following them to the stage during the weigh-ins. Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz was on hand for his brother, Nate. Former UFC heavyweight champion Mark Coleman accompanied Phil Baroni to the scale. And former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields made an appearance with his teammate, Daniel Roberts.
Shields is now with the UFC and is expected to face Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight title later this year.
