Ohio Deputy Killed by Shotgun Blast

CLARK COUNTY, Ohio --

We now know the name of the Clark County Sheriff's deputy who was shot and killed in the line of duty on New Year's Day.
Officials said Deputy Suzanne Waughtel-Hopper, 40, was shot and killed by a man armed with a shotgun. She was dispatched to the Enon Beach Mobile Home Park in the 2400 block of Enon Beach Rd. on reports of shots fired.

Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly said, "This is the worst day of my entire law enforcement career."
Sheriff Gene Kelly said Deputy Waughtel-Hopper was taking photographs of some footprints at the scene when the gunman opened the door of a silver trailer and shot her, killing her instantly.

The Sheriff choked back tears as he announced the death of a deputy that he hired. "The deputy is an outstanding deputy, is married and the parent of two children," said Sheriff Kelly. "Our deputy never had the opportunity to take cover or return fire."

A German Township police officer was also shot and wounded. Jeremy Blum was taken to Miami Valley Hospital with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. Officer Blum is in fair condition.
One Enon resident said, "I can't imagine this happening on New Year's Day."

The first shooting of the deputy happened at approximately 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The German Township officer was shot after he responded to the scene.
Dan Johnston and his wife were shocked to hear gunshots. "We didn't want to go outside so we just hunkered down inside."
Officials said they tried to communicate with the gunman, telling him to surrender. However, he returned their requests with more shots and officers returned fire, killing the man.
"It's a shame that something like this had to happen," said Johnston.

Dozens of cruisers and emergency vehicles converged at the scene. Sheriff Kelly and Springfield Police Division Chief Stephen Moody rushed to the scene.
A Special Operations team from the Springfield Police Department arrived around 1 p.m. to assist in the standoff with the suspect. A second Swat Team from the Ohio Highway Patrol arrived on the scene a short time later.
There were law enforcement officials from the Clark County Sheriff's Office, Springfield and Enon police, Tremont City and the Ohio Highway Patrol.
I-70 was shut down for nearly an hour to both eastbound and westbound traffic in the area of Enon Road.
The name of the gunman, who during the shootout with police, was not released.

Many residents said this was the worst thing that has ever happened in Enon. "It's scary to know that something like this happened where you live, " said one woman.
Our partners at the Dayton Daily News said Deputy Waughtel-Hopper had been with the Clark County Sheriff's Department since 1999.
