According to Richard Schaefer, CEO for Golden Boy Promotions, negotiations are still ongoing to finalize an opponent for Amir Khan's next defense of the WBA junior welterweight title. The return of Khan (24-1, 17KOs) has been set for April 16 in the United Kingdom. The name that continues to pop up is Lamont Peterson, who fought to a draw with Victor Ortiz in the December co-feature to Khan's victory over Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas.
"We are looking at that [Khan] and working on that as well, and the date is set on his return for April 16. We are going to be working on the financial situation and the opponent and so on," said Schaefer. "But the Khan fight will definitely be in the United Kingdom. There are different names that are being discussed, and one of the names which has been discussed is Lamont Peterson."
Khan's next fight could be a lead-in to a potential battle with WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (51-6, 35KOs). Golden Boy's head matchmaker Eric Gomez was informed by Marquez that he's interested in moving up to junior welterweight to challenge someone like Khan. Golden Boy had tried to make the fight in early 2010, but couldn't reach a deal between the two fighters.
Marquez is scheduled to return on April 9, a week before Khan enters the ring, and the two back to back HBO televised fights could set up a fall meeting between the two stars.
"Marquez has expressed some interest in going up to 140 and perhaps maybe fighting Amir Khan," said Gomez. "Amir Khan is of interest, and we have tried making that fight before. So there is some interest."
