BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Canada's Brayden Schenn was named the most valuable player and the top forward at the 2011 world junior hockey championship, while teammate Ryan Ellis received top defenceman honours.

Schenn scored a tournament-high 18 points (eight goals, 10 assists), tying Dale McCourt's total in 1977 for most points by a Canadian at one championship.

He had a goal and an assist in Canada's 5-3 loss to Russia in the gold-medal game even though he was playing with a separated shoulder suffered in Canada's quarter-final win over Switzerland.

On the way, Schenn passed Wayne Gretzky and Eric Lindros, who each had 17 points at a championship.

Ellis, Canada's captain, took top defenceman honours with three goals and seven assists, including the opening goal in Wednesday's final.

Both Schenn and Ellis were also named to the tournament all-star team, along with Canadian forward Ryan Johansen (three goals, six assists).

United States goaltender Jack Campbell, who was named the tournament's best goalie, and Russian defenceman Dmitri Orlov and forward Yevgeni Kuznetsov were the other all-stars.
