I now have an ISO image on CD of Ubuntu. I can run it on my laptop.
Now my question is do I need to permanently install Ubuntu or always run it from CD? If I run from the CD what happens to all the information I inputted in the files as required?

Thank you

If you want to use Ubuntu as your primary operating system, installing it to the hard drive is the way to go. If you run it off of the CD, it runs in RAM, so any personal settings will be lost. Running off of the hard drive is also much faster....

It's also possible to dual-boot linux and windows by creating a separate partition, there is software out there to do this non-destructively, I'm not sure if the Ubuntu installer can do it or not...

I moved your thread to the Linux section, as you will receive more responses here.

You can do a dual boot system from the CD ubuntu installer. It works good as I have done this.

You can install it using WUBI:
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-installer

You can install it to a USB device such as an external usb hard drive or usb stick (min 8 GB). This gives a permanent install, will not alter the laptop hard drive and will be faster than a LIVE CD and it is even more way cool.:dancing_peng:

That's how I run Lucid Puppylinux 5.1.1.
Off my USB stick.
Boots quick enough, and does everything I want it to do without installing to HD.
Way cool for sure.
