I the real good electrastatic ones from sam's clubs now before i had washable ones they wore out after about 10 years. Make sure there is no leaks that go around the filters. With what everyone else has said that is all except for getting a good quality air purfier which i think would do the rest but i wife wouldn't let me get the best one and there are lot of people don't like them.

There are also smaller filters you can put on each vent, more work to take each vent out and put the filters on but everything helps.

Is your ducts in a crawl space or over head,if filter was changed reg.dust should not be in duct.Return duct could be broken.

I just read this add-on couple years ago. This a little expensive but the for the health of little one's its worth to have it.

That is a great add-on for sure...But i have a few questions for you..
How old is the furnace..If its been replace with a new one and the house is 12 or more years older you would still have a lot of dust in your duct work even if you did change your filters all the time..When you get a new furnace installed the cfm will be increased causing the dust to come out more for a whale..May not be the case if the furnace is original..
Also as mentioned you may have some leakage in your return on the other side of your filter...
Also when you had them come out to clean your ducts did they just use a sweeper and sweep in all the registers with just the regular hose..When the duct work is cleaned correctly they will put special boot cover on the register box or sometime right on the supply run at the furnace and use special vac that has a high suction volume to get all the dust out of the ducts..A lot of the regular furnace repair places only use a regular vac and just sweep out the register boots..That will not get all the dust out of the supply trunk..
If its a electronic Media filter it would be around 280-350 to purchase from a store..
and anywhere from 450-600 if a company comes out and installs it..That's parts plus
labor..
Another thing is if you or someone in the house has a very high sensitivity to allergens this is another method that helps before the filter and after the filter to kill air born allergens..
This stuff cost a lot but its worth it if everyone is very sensitive to allergens...
Its usually better to get both installed you will get a better deal on labor..

Do you know if the duct cleaning contractor cleaned out the furnace as well? If not, it's probably due for a cleanup and maintenance anyways. Also, do you have carpet or pets?

this is what I did when I had a house with forced air... cut the feet off of pantie hose, make sure it is long enough to cover the vents top and bottom, like you slip the vent into the feet.... eliminated 99% of the dust.

my house its 40 something years old.the furnace was here when i bought the house, about 8 years ago now.when the guy came to clean the ducts he used a air hose to blow the air from the ducts and ahd a vacume hose atached to the vents to suck the air out.thats what i was told anyways cause i was at work.and i dont think he cleanned the furnace, and carpet i dont have but i have a dog.i was reading from Hunter11 about the Bounce sheets and i was thinking i may try and put some bounce sheets insted of a panti hose.even thoug they both sound helpfull.thanks again for the help peoples

bounce sheets I think produce more resistance to the air coming in, that means the furnace will have to work much harder and longer to get the temperature up to what the thermostat is set to, higher heating costs.

and to Bigpineguy,im located in minnesota and cant remember the name of the company that did the job.if you come up with the write up i would really appreciate it.
i would try anything just to get me till the summer time, until i can have someone come and clean it again.thanks again

If the ducts where not cleaned out for a long period of time a bad job with an air hose and a vacuum on the return probaly just loosened part of the dust in your ducts.. They should also pass a brush in the ducts to properly loosen and push the dust, lint, pet hairs and anything else that found its way into the duct.. Cleaning the fan .. A thourough cleaning that is well done and a properly fitting good quality filter will usualy do the job.. Also cleaning the furnace in its heating and cooling section is a must ..There could be a lot of acumulated dust and lint in there..

Thanks JCO,we still have about 2 1/2 months of more cold so we can wait till summer gets here or till it gets nice enough to shut the furnace of and clean it.with the advice and help that im getting here i think i can clean most of it myself.thanks

The brush can only be used on metal ducts, it will shred fiberglass ones and create even bigger issues

I didn't get a chance today, but I will try to do it tomorrow though....another tip is to make sure that all the other vents are covered/sealed to get maximum vacuum ( except for the one being cleaned
