Washington, D.C. (January 5, 2011) -- Vizio today said it will launch 50-inch and 58-inch 'Cinemawide' HDTVs with a 21:9 aspect ratios later in the year. No pricing or launch dates were revealed.

The company says the sets can display native 2.35:1 so movies can be shown in their original cinematic aspect ratio without any black bars. Each model will also feature Vizio's Internet Apps in Cinema Mode. The company says this will permit users to browse apps next to 16:9 HD content without changing the picture's resolution or size. (The Vizio sets have built-in Dual-Band 802.11n Wi-Fi.)

Vizio will showcase the two sets, which will also come with 3D features, at this week's Consumer Electronics Show.

"For movie-buffs, the Cinemawide HDTV series is a revelation and lets them watch movies as the filmmakers intended," stated Matthew McRae, VIZIO's chief technology officer. "The result is a significantly more immersive experience that fills your field of vision without black bars or loss of resolution. In addition, accessing favorite apps with VIZIO Internet Apps can now be a true side-by-side experience with 16:9 content for a full HD image right next to the VIA sidebar."

Vizio notes that many movies are filmed in 2.35:1 aspect ratio but are shown in the 16:9 ratio on most current HDTVs.

"So whether you're watching 2001, Lord of the Rings, Kill Bill, Toy Story 3, or countless other movies, you can watch them in their original aspect ratio and without black bars," the company said in its release.

In 2009, in Europe, Philips has introduced a High-Definition TV that has the widest aspect ratio yet. Called the Cinema 21:9, the 56-inch LCD HDTV delivers the closest proportions yet to a screen in a movie theater. The aspect ratio is 2:33 to 1. Hewlett-Packard has said it's developing a new TV screen that will be so wide that it can display an entire basketball court
