c/p from boxing news 24 by Chris Williams
January 25th, 2011
By Chris Williams: Bob Arum is obviously excited about having his fighter Manny Pacquiao facing 39-year-old Shane Mosley on CBS/Showtime instead of HBO on May 7th, because it will allow Arum to take advantage of all the commercial advertisements that will be made on CBS to help market the 5/7 Pacquiao-Mosley pay-per-view event from Las Vegas, Nevada. However, I’m not so sure that’s a good thing. Coming from a former waiter/cook’s perceptive, I’ve seen a lot of customers turned off for good when they weren’t happy with the food they received or the service from other waiters.
I discovered that if they got a bad product, the customers were often lost for good. Frankly, I see the Pacquiao-Mosley fight as not just a bad product but a terrible one. To me, I see as selling a batch of old salmon way past it’s sell date and being served up to a lot of important new customers. I think this is a bad thing for boxing. Normally, I would see this as a good move by Arum, but only if he were willing to match Pacquiao up against a good fighter that is still in his prime and not someone that is totally shot like Mosley.
This fight is going to anger a lot of casual fans that will buy it in droves, some of them thinking that Mosley is still relevant. Once they find out he’s completely shot, they’re going to be angry and a lot of them will decide there and then that they’ve had it with purchasing fights on PPV. As such, this fight won’t be good for boxing I feel because it’s a bad product to be serving to fans. I can’t help seeing this through a customer service angle, because it taught be a valuable lesson early on. If I was Arum, I wouldn’t serve up this mismatch to all these unknowing fans who won’t have a clue how shot Mosley is until they’ve already paid their hard-earned money for the Pacquiao-Mosley PPV fight.

One of journalism's ethics and professional responsibilities is to remain unbiased and objective; to report and publish facts or breaking news and not distort them.
Sadly, Chris William's reputation has been shot several times with his rants against Manny Pacquiao. He has violated the very essence of a writer's responsibility by editorializing and maligning the objects of his highly prejudiced stance. But what else could anyone expect from someone whose perception is severely limited by previous experience? Just how does a past experience as a waiter/cook add credibility to such skewed perception of facts?
Cases in point: Mosley is "totally shot"? This is like "a batch of old salmon way past it’s sell (maybe he meant 'sale') date and being served up to a lot of important new customers". I wouldn’t serve up this mismatch to all these unknowing fans who won’t have a clue how shot Mosley is until they’ve already paid their hard-earned money for the Pacquiao-Mosley PPV fight.
Good grammar, exciting simile, intelligent inferences, and creative expressions are obviously not in Williams' journalistic arsenal. While I would have preferred Pacquiao matched against Marquez, Berto, Ortiz, or anyone of the young hungry welterweights, I would not necessarily gravely denounce Mosley as "shot" or a case of "bad salmon".
Besides, his juvenile rant against "unknowing fans" is a mockery of everyone that follows boxing and ordinary folks all over the world that consider Pacquiao their "hero" and role model. Williams' limited understanding of human psychology exposes his frailties. Many of the millions who will flock the big screens to see Pacquiao "perform" are not boxing purists. Criminals and terrorists cease their activities for a day to see "their man". Government agents stop in their security advances for the same reason.
Fans who worship Michael Jackson or Lady Gaga do not do so because their idol is better than Brian Adams or Beyonce. They follow their favorites anywhere they go, whoever they are with because they acquire a sense of satisfaction; they are thoroughly entertained.
Such is the case with Manny Pacquiao, who Williams hate.
Millions will watch Pacquiao - against anyone; regardless of whether he gets a unanimous decision or knocks out his opponent; whether it is on HBO or SHOWTIME. Millions could care less about William's impertinent and biased reporting.
I agree. I am would prefer to see him fight Marquez, but this fight isn't going to turn off part time fans to the point they never watch boxing again. Manny is an action fighter. He throws lots of punches and people like that. Even if Mosley for what ever reason decides not to throw hardly any punches like he did against Mayweather, Manny will throw the punches and most everyone will feel like they got there money's worth.

Hand speed does nothing to Floyd, we saw that with Mosley. His defense was movements of the torso and head. He does not come from the front, but sideways. Mosley was very careful not to throw punches cause he knew the counter punch ability of his opponent. Manny's defense is his hand speed, he come forward with both hands. We'll see how Mosley will react to that. It's gone be a good fight.

Maybe the bad salmon is indeed Shane Mosley??In reference the bad sell or smell is perhaps the fight itself.Chris Williams may never win a pulitzer prize award for achievements in newspaper journalism, literature or music but his point is well taken.
And for true boxing fans they share the same opinion, another watch Manny Pacquiao beat up another lesser opponent and the story goes on and the price goes up and the saga unfortunately continues for the love of money.I would rather have Chris Williams prepare me a nice meal of food than spend another dime on Bob Arum or Manny Pacquaio. But only a die hard Pac fan could distort Williams original point of view. That being this fight is going to be another stinker and i can relate to that, who wouldn't.Peace

He didn't throw any punches because he was afraid of getting countered? That was a sorry excuse when Joshua Clottey used that against Manny. It is even worse when a fighter that is supposed to be on the level that Mosley is, uses it.
Look at the Marcos Maidana - Amir Khan fight. Maidana what clearly out classed by Khan in the first part of the fight. Every time Maidana tried to throw a punch, Khan countered him with 3, 4, and 5 punch combinations and yet, that never stopped Maidana from trying. Khan even dropped Maidana with a vicious body shot that most people would have never got up from, and yet, that still never stopped Maidana from trying. His efforts, almost payed off for him in the end. Khan was out on his feet at the end of the fight. If Maidana would just has a couple of more minutes, he might have been able to get Khan totally out of there.
I at least expected Mosley to put in the effort that Oscar De La Hoya did. Oscar pushed the action in that fight. He even pushed Mayweather up against the ropes and threw a lot of punches. Sure Mayweather got De La Hoya with a few counter punches, but Mayweather never really hurt Oscar with anything nor did he discourage Oscar from trying. To this day, there are still all kinds of people that think Oscar got robbed in that fight. I have never heard one person say that Mosley got robbed.
I can think of a lot of fighters that put more effort in fighting Mayweather then Mosley did. Just to name a few, Oscar De La Hoya. Ricky Hatton, and even little Juan Manuel Márquez did. They might not have won, but at least they tried.
I sure hope that Mosley puts in more effort in this fight then he did against Mayweather. Anyway, I still don't thing it is going to make people run from boxing like some are trying to say. I have a feeling that Mosley will put in more effort in it this time. I am sure he studied the tapes of that fight and thought, WTF was I thinking? Why didn't I through punches when I had the chance? I am sure he is kicking himself for not even trying in the biggest fight of his career. He has a second chance now, so he better make the most out of it.

We all have our individual preferences and follow our favorite sport personality. In a free society, we are allowed to express our opinion no matter how stinky or stupid it may be.
Thus, please understand that whether Williams has a "good point or bad" is not the issue here. When one decides to write and cover news as a journalist, he forfeits that "freedom of expressing a personal opinion"; he must write and report only facts; not color or editorialize them. And it is evident, just like it is with DAVE LAHR, that these two jerks are highly opinionated making them unfit for their industry.
As for Mosley, I am not prepared to call him any name, least of all label him to be a "shot boxer". Most of all calling this a case of "bad salmon" is just going over the top lacking in good taste and respect.
Why does everyone wants to fight Manny? Yes, you are right - MONEY. I can't lay blame on Arum, Mosley, or anyone else for that matter because that is how society has evolved. Sports is big business where a baseball or basketball star makes multi-millions a year while a nurse or a teacher struggles to make ends meet.
Now set aside boxing differences and tell me. Who is accountable for this rotten situation.

I believe they picked mosley for this fight just to use this fight as a measuring stick and to compare results since he has fought mayweather. They are doing him a favor and I am sure he settled for whatever money arum was offering.I am not a pac hater because it not his fault but its just that better fights are out there and would like to see a better challenge.Jmo

I will tell you who is accountable. Those who get paid; rush to the pub; shell out their hard earned dollars for a bleacher seat at the stadium or hockey rink; buy more beer and hotdogs; but have no money to buy a textbook for Junior. Oh but they have lots of money to send Junior to a Baseball camp.
Twenty years later, Junior, who spent his school days playing sports and could not handle the academic requirements of university, ends up just like Daddy: waiting for the paycheque, rushing to the pub, buying tickets to the next hockey game, drinking more beer AND joins the 50,000+ who succumb to paying for higher and higher ticket prices so that Barcley, Luongo, Henin...and Arum, Dela Hoya...could laugh all the way to the bank with their millions.
Sorry, you asked me!

That is more like it....returning some humor to a rather sad issue. So here is my bet......
come fight time....you buy the nachos, I bring the beer.... and we will both watch Pacquiao "go to work" - "nothing personal man, I am just doing my job"!
Oh, wait a minute, a thought just occurred to me. Why does Williams and Lahr hate Pacquiao so much? Ho...Hum....cause the little Pilipino midget simply smiles on camera and he makes millions. Williams and Lahr could not even take tap dancing lessons to make .00005% of what Manny makes in a day!

However, the jump from Top Rank to Showtime may have had direct relationship with the first title defense Cotto on 12 March.
And is that Arum did not sit well that HBO rejected the first offer to him by Top Rank for Cotto's return to the ring.
Originally, it was considered the Armenian Vanes Martirosyan, an 24 year old prospect with a record of 28-0 with 17 knockouts, as Cotto's opponent in his first defense of the scepter junior middleweight World Boxing Association (WBA).
"Cotto spent seven years with HBO, and they have rejected a decent fight. They have no idea what they do, "said Arum told ESPN.com a few days ago. Arum revealed he gave the fight to HBO for $ 1.5 million. "We offered him a bargain for that fight. We said 'no' and decided to go with another fight. This will affect all our relationships in the future and I mean 'all' our relations. "
Jump to competition
In fact, affected him.
HBO, in addition to rejecting the Cotto fight, he chose to place the Sergio Martinez the same date of March 12 at the Ukrainian Sergiy Dzinziruk for the title "Diamond" World Boxing Council and a regular bulletin of the television network, the which competes directly with the date Top Rank had spread to the defense of the Puerto Rican.
And that's where the patience seemed to come Arum.
Top Rank announced last week the meeting of Cotto and Mayorga Showtime PPV on a billboard will serve as a prelude to the real "goose that lays golden eggs", Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley.
Yesterday's announcement also tries to open a new promotional strategy to grab more people.
The promotion will include documentaries and Mosley Pacquiao before the fight at Fight Camp program 360, which will be presented on Showtime, while CBS will present a special program about the fight in April.
"This arrangement between CBS and Showtime to promote and distribute the match between Pacquiao and Mosley holder is a new opportunity for the boxing as the sport can reach a large projection of millions of people in the United States by CBS, the network with the most popular shows in the nation, "Arum said via statement.
However, Arum denied that the move to Showtime was in retaliation for not accepting HBO Cotto fight.
"I do not care what they have said or written about. This has nothing to do with my dissatisfaction with the way things HBO has done, "said the boss of Top Rank, in an interview with USA Today.
Arum won the jump to Showtime to the fact that, in partnership with CBS, the promotional reach will have a huge increase.
"HBO did a good job, but we were limited. Now, with CBS, which also has to Showtime, we will be able to put the promotion of the fight at 150 million households, together with some of its major programs. This is great! "He said.

Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao didn't know about the switch to Showtime from HBO Sports when news of the deal first broke.
In an interview with BoxingScene.com, The Inquirer and ABS-CBN at his congress office earlier this week, Pacquiao was surprised when asked for his reaction on the move to the larger CBS Network organization, which has an audience reach of 115 million homes.
It got to the point where Pacquiao's adviser, Michael Koncz, had to brief him on the switch and basically had to explain the advantages of moving to CBS which owns Showtime and would help enhance his image as a crossover star while also giving his wife Jinkee a chance to appear on CBS shows.
Pacquiao's immediate reaction after the briefing by Koncz was "that's good" noting that HBO Sports had a base of only 26 million.
In a joint official announcement in New York,
Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Showtime Sports and Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said the Showtime Networks Inc. and CBS have joined forces with Top Rank, Inc. to promote, produce and distribute the biggest boxing event of the year, the showdown between pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 7.
The agreement effectively brings together Pacquiao, the top athlete and personality in the sport, with SHOWTIME, the fastest growing premium television network in the U.S., and its parent company CBS Corporation whose programming and media assets span network and local television, pay and basic cable, radio, outdoor and online.
The announcement said the campaign will include the SHOWTIME Sports documentary series FIGHT CAMP 360° in preview of Pacquiao vs. Mosley which would replace HBO's 24/7 series. The top rated CBS Television Network will participate by broadcasting a primetime special of the show in April.
Pacquiao who appeared on the top-rated CBS show "60 Minutes" prior to the fight against Antonio Margarito which also featured US President Barack Obama proved to be a hit.
"The arrangement with CBS and Showtime regarding the promotion and distribution of the Pacquiao vs. Mosley championship event represents a new opportunity for the sport of boxing. It enables boxing to reach millions more people in the United States given the reach of CBS, the most watched television network in the country. This development will not only benefit Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley but all of the young men participating in the sport of boxing," said Arum.
Hershman said, "We look forward to combining Showtime Sports’ production and distribution expertise with Top Rank's promotional power and the amazing programming and marketing resources available to us across CBS to present the biggest boxing event of 2011."
On May 7, Pacquiao will fight under the SHOWTIME PPV banner for the first time, bringing it the highest profile and biggest revenue generating athlete in boxing whose fights over the past two years have garnered nearly 4 million pay per view buys and unrivaled box office receipts. The event marks the first SHOWTIME PPV event since 2005’s Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo II.
“Pay per view has been an opportunistic play for SHOWTIME Sports in recent years,” Hershman continued. “In Pacquiao, we have a global celebrity and unquestionably the most popular boxer of this era attempting to continue his dominance in the ring against Shane Mosley, one of the most talented and recognizable fighters of today not named Manny Pacquiao. With this marquee match up, Pacquiao’s proven track record in pay per view and CBS’s participation, this is the perfect opportunity for Showtime to be back in the pay per view business and in a big way.”
Showtime has a long history of success in pay per view dating back to the 1990s. In 1997, the SHOWTIME PPV presentation of Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield II garnered the most pay per view buys for any sport or entertainment event in history. The 1.99 million buys stood as the industry benchmark for nearly 10 years, until being surpassed in May 2007.
