Former three division champion Erik "El Terrible" Morales (51-6, 35KOs) says he is not concerned with the high odds of victory being placed in the favor of Juan Manuel Marquez (52-5, 38KOs). Morales says a verbal agreement has been reached with Marquez on the money for a fight on April 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The only thing remaining, says Morales, is Marquez's signature on the contract.
There are some experts who placed 7-1 odds in favor of Marquez. Morales doesn't care about the numbers. He says Marquez is an older boxer, 37-years-old in comparison to 34-years for Morales. And more important, Morales says "styles make fights." Morales says the match is going to happen at 140-pounds. The WBC's President Jose Sulaiman has agreed to place the "Diamond Belt" in the contest.
"We have a verbal agreement, and economically it seems that we are both satisfied and the weight for the fight should be at super lightweight. The only details remaining is that we still need to sign the contract, but there is nothing that can break down the fight," Morales told Sal Rodriguez.
"I knew even before the negotiations that I wouldn't be the favorite in the fight, but I do not mind, although I didn't expect to be such a big underdog. At the end of the day, it's the preparation that will give me the win and not betting. In fact, I'm surprised that it's expected a such an easy fight for Marquez because I'm younger than him and also styles make fights."
