Church holds Sunday service in a bar

KINGSTON, Ont. — For some, church and beer should go hand-in-hand.

Members of the Cafe Church in Kingston, Ont., held a special service in a pub in the eastern Ontario town to try to attract more people.

“We’re trying to build a buzz,” community outreach and evangelism director Gerald McCaffrey said. “We’re trying to make church cool again. It has become irrelevant to people of this generation, but we think it still has a good message: that God loves us.”

About 100 non-regular churchgoers raised a glass to God on Jan. 31, the first Church in a Pub event.

McCaffrey said that reaction to the first Church in a Pub was “very positive” and Café Church is considering holding another, perhaps on a Friday or Saturday night which would have less of a “churchy feel” than a Sunday service.

The church holds regular Sunday services with "the finest coffee."

“People are thirsty . . . for love, for support and for God, although it may not always point to that,” McCaffrey said.
