According to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, a deal is "not yet" done, but that it is, "almost there" for a welterweight clash between WBC titlist Andre Berto (27-0, 21 KOs), of Winter Haven, Fla., and southpaw junior welterweight contender Victor Ortiz (28-2-2, 22 KOs), of Oxnard, Calif., as part of an HBO televised, split-site doubleheader on April 16.
The fight would be paired with the already finalized junior welterweight clash between WBA king Amir Khan (24-1, 17KOs) of England and Northern Ireland's unbeaten southpaw Paul McCloskey, which takes place at the MEN Arena in England. The 31-year-old McCloskey (22-0, 12 knockouts) was chosen over fellow contenders, Lamont Peterson (28-1-1, 14 KOs), of Washington, D.C., and fellow Englishman John Murray (30-0, 18 KOs).
