Satellite : DIRECTV Back Science Initiative
Programming: Discovery, DIRECTV Back Science Initiative; CNN's Neutrality & More

• Boosting Science: In support of the White House’s efforts to promote learning and careers in the fields of science, Discovery Communications and DIRECTV are pitching in to boost science literacy. Discovery is launching a multi-year multimedia project entitled “Be The Future,” which will feature programming based around educational curriculum. Additionally, DIRECTV will be moving the Science Channel to Total Choice so millions of additional subs can access the content.

• CNN's Neutrality: CNN’s prime-time ratings may be dropping like a stone in the U.S. (they’re currently in the cable news No. 3 spot, behind Fox News and MSNBC and sibling HLN even beats them in some slots) but CNN execs say they’re unfazed. Speaking to Crain’s NY, CNN Worldwide president Jim Walton notes that CNN's profits have grown by more than 10% every year since 2003 – with 2009 coming “very close” to double digit growth. A good part of that growth is coming from CNN’s digital and international properties ... and on the global stage “neutrality” is key. Ergo the abrupt departure of the controversial Lou Dobbs from the network. Analysts tend to be a bit less positive about this “neutrality over numbers” stance but, for now at least, expect CNN to keep on course.

• China’s High School Musical: The Walt Disney Company in China is beginning production of another local-co-production project twith “Disney High School Musical:China.” Disney will work with Shanghai Media Group (SMG) and Huayi Brothers Media Corp to film the movie which is planned to release in the summer of 2010.

• Feast of Fury: With holiday feasting on their minds, Verizon FiOS TV subs will be treated to "Feast of Fury" – a compilation of non-stop adventure ? programming from EPIX. Beginning Thanksgiving day Verizon subs can watch back-to-back Indiana Jones movies followed by a weekend of films like "Iron Man," "The Hunt for Red October," "Flash Gordon," "Casino Royale," "Golden Eye," "Red Dawn" and the "The Untouchables." The Feast of Fury can be viewed on FiOS TV channel 395, in HD on channel 895 and on VOD.•
