Middleweight champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KOs) of Argentina, but now residing in Oxnard, CA, met the pre-weight requirement today and registered in at 173 lbs, the weight was within the mandated 10% over the 160 lb middleweight limit. Martinez, trained by 2010’s ‘Trainer of the Year’ Gabriel Sarmiento at the World Crown Sports Training Center in Port Hueneme, CA will step back into the ring on Saturday, March 12th against the undefeated Sergei Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 KOs) of Ukraine at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, CT which will be shown live on HBO’s ‘World Championship Boxing’.
“I’m training very hard for this fight, just like I do for every other fight, I feel very strong and we’re right on track for March 12,” said middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. “I have no doubt that this year will be even better than last year. I’m on a quest to be the best pound for pound fighter in the world and on March 12th I will put on a great fight for the fans,” continued Martinez.
In the co-feature bout Andy Lee (24-1, 18 KOs) of Ireland takes on Craig McEwan (19-0, 10 KOs) in a 10-round middleweight bout.
Also, in action that night will be 2008 U.S Olympian and junior middleweight prospect Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (12-0, 8 KOs) as well ashighly talented and hard hitting super featherweight prospect Javier “El Abejon” Fortuna (13-0, 10 KOs) of the Dominican Republic, in separate bouts.
In his last bout, Sergio Martinez knocked out former two-time world champion Paul “The Punisher” Williams (39-2, 27 KOs) with a devastating left hook in the second round in the highly anticipated rematch this past November at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ earning him “Knock Out of the Year” and also “Fighter of the Year”.
