Ok,,,so,I don't think the technology exists yet for this. But<I REALLY!!!! wanna drop my landline,,and go with cellular internet. I spoke to ATT today, she said the best they have is MY FI,,with a 5 gb ? limit per month,,which would be sucked up in a day easily. Oh yeah,,I have a Nano 2!! This is my quandry!! I could get by with a tether package computer wise,,,but I need enough internet to keep my dongle happy! Anyone know of a way besides paying my local phone company or satellite internet,to get enough wi fi to run my reciever!?? Thanx Guys in a advance!

She said i can try it a month for free, but fealt it wouldn't be enough. I told her I would be using it for my comp, and wireless tv,youtube,,,etc.. She said there was NO WAY it would be enough. TA guys!
a router with a 3g dongle connection for your cellular internet
or
tether your cell to your computer for internet then activate your computer as a hotspot/wired through ethernet
or
get a wifi dongle such as a vonets wifi dongle and connect to your access point

Very rural ? How rural ? do you have anyone near you ? neighbors, town, airports....
You posted in the WiFi section, so, I thought that you wanted to do something via WiFi....

Man,I suck at posting! I am very rural,no neighbors. Airports?? NO! Rural,,I currently have wireless al through my home via,,our phone company. I want to rid myself of them, and still have my Nano 2 and computer work. I was told by AT& t that they might not have enough "time" alotted for me to use what all I want to. So,my ? is does anyone know the best way for me to achieve this? The answers above lead me to believe that their service may or will take care of me. But,I ultimately need "WIFI" in my home. THanx!

I also struggled with the "landline" delima a few years ago. I was really impressed with the satellite internet access until I read that they cut you back to dial-up speeds if you go over a certain amount of download. Lucklily, I was testing Verizon just b/f they implemented the 5gig cap so I got grandfathered in (not that it really matters b/c unless I d/l a movie I have never went over 4gig in one month.) I am not familiar with the fta box you have, but if it's just doing updates it should be minimal. My Tivos do updates and I can tell you the time they spend downloading updates are about 15-20 mins MAX (my connection is pretty slow, about 300-500.) As for your house line... I found this great device called a Dock-N-Talk. Of course there are several out there now but at the time they were the best. It plugs into the house system and when ever my cell phone is in bluetooth range, it connects all the house phones through my cell phone.

Well as far as WIFI in your location all you need is a wireless router, but that doesn’t solve the landline problems.
Connecting via cellular service is one way but its slow (depends on the distance from the cell site) and costly, also any 911 calls wont go thru the local emergency center, satellite internet is another way but with their “Fair Access Policy” rules they cap you when you get to the 5 gig limit (I know as I have satellite internet, but not for long) one satellite internet provider has a plan were if you access them during the late hours at night you cap will be relaxed, that one is Hughes Net.
The big problems with satellite internet is the slow upload speeds and the delay, the upload speed is 500K max and the latency is around 900 to 1500 mS this is too much of a delay to use any type of “Phone Jack”, “Skype”or“Voice over IP” service, the delay in the conversations makes it impossible to communicate.
So your best bet is to stay with the DSL connection you have now, or look around to see if there is a terrestrial connection for internet, I found one service that is supplying a radio link internet service to a town on the backside of the mountains from me, just so happens that there is enough signal at my location to get a 2 meg both way connection with 6 mS of delay with no data cap, that’s a great connection compared to satellite, as soon as the equipment arrives I’m switching over.
So do some looking around, contact some of the local internet suppliers in the towns around you to see if they have something that may work.
Also you dont mention how far you are from a town with a WIFI service, and do you have line of site to it?
(sorry too much coffee again)

Have you considered getting rid of the landline phone service but keeping the DSL only? I believe alot of phone company's now a day offer NAKED, DRY or DARK DSL (all mean the same thing). You can have the highspeed without the phone number thus saving some money on the phone portion of the bill. Using the cell phone for internet is one option but it can be expensive unless you have a good plan. I talked to my cell company and they said I would have high speed but the cost was too much for the BW I needed.
