Ford is recalling nearly 150,000 F-150 pickup trucks to fix a problem that could cause the air bags to deploy inadvertently. The recall covers 2005-06 model pickups in North America.
Ford says there is "relatively low risk" of bags going off and that a warning would provide warning of a problem. The defect involves a part in the steering wheel assembly that can chafe the bag wiring.
But this one may not be over. The recall covers far fewer trucks than the government has said should be recalled. Last month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told Ford that it had dozens of reports of injuries and that the recall should cover 1.3 million 2004-06 trucks. Ford has argued against a recall since NHTSA began looking at the issue in 2009 and the safety agency will review Ford's latest action.
