WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (20-0, 17KOs) was sitting ringside last Saturday at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas when Nonito Donaire pulled out a crushing two round knockout of Fernando Montiel to capture the WBO/WBC bantamweight titles. Vazquez felt the champion rushed in and left himself open to the left hook that ended the fight.
"A very smart fight by Donaire but not very smart by Montiel. He made a big mistake. He rushed. He's the champion. He should have taken his time. I'm not sure if the crowd [played a role]. The fans shouldn't make you to do something," Vazquez said to BoxingScene.com.
Vazquez will defend his title against Jorge Arce on the Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley undercard on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Vazquez-Arce is part of the pay-per-view card.
