Hi you all
I need help about my router WRT54GS. Last night I folllowed the instruction on how to program this router. It was succesful. I unplug the power on the router that night. This morning when I tried to access the internet It says no connectivity I check the signal on the router there is no signal.
Thanks

Do the 30-30-30 (power on, power off, power back-all while holding the reset button in) reset and then try its default web page. It will wipe all your setting out and you will need to reprogram.

Not sure what you mean by checking the signal though. If you have lights then you are probably okay. If no lights then you may have bricked your router. BTW do you load a third party firmware or just programmed\update linksys?

Thanks Polly
I think I bricked my router. What I'm trying to do was resetting the router back to it's original setting. I followed the link here on how to make it work and I used 10.0.0.1 at first and it worked. But that same night, I unplugged the router. I found out the next morning when I'm trying to log in the internet that it is not working. Then, I tried to fix it again using that 10.0.0.1 IP but unsuccessful. Then I tried to load the 192-168-1-1 to set it to it's original but I did something wrong in the process. Now I tried many IP but all fails to read it. I read from Linksys about my case and found that I think bricked it. I hoped I am wrong my question now is HOW can I unbrick it? I also tried the 30-30-30 but no success. I’m getting so desperate. Please help...

Thanks.
I did the 30. And then I tried 10.0.0.1 / 192-168-1-1 still nothing. Do I need to disable the local area connection or not? Will it matter wether it's on or not?

Recheck all the settings . Or press the reset button and re set all the things again . There may be something wrong to configuration .

Just wanting to make sure that you are using 192.168.1.1 and not 192-168-1-1 in your browsers address bar. No need for the 10.0.0.1 at this time. Also need to make sure that you are connected to the routers internet port if connecting directly to the web and if connecting through another router, and of the available ports will work.
You also did not mention which lights are lite. Plug the router into the power supply, with nothing else connected and let us know what is showing.

There are many version of the DD-WRT software and many builds of each version. You can try linksys.com as the lights should work the same. Since you can see the "home" page you are not bricked.
http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT54GSOnce you get the feel then go back to DD-WRT forum and browse their HOW-TOs.

Hi Again,
I tried many things but the end results are the same. It failed to do firmware upgrade. Also, to let you know the lights on the router WLAN is on. Just curious about it's light being on. I removed the the wire. I just plugged the power. What I'm seeing now is that the power light is on as well as WLAN

Curious as to whether you how got your router working. At first it can be overwhelming but if you take it one step at a time everything will fall into place.

METHOD FOR EOC, INTEL, AND POSSIBLY OTHER FLASH CHIPS
1.First download this file: http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/08-12-10-r14929/broadcom/dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin
2.You will also need: http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/others/tornado/GSv7/vxworkskillerGSv7-v3.bin
3.Configure your local LAN ethernet address to 192.168.1.100 and connect your local ethernet to your WRT54GSv7 on one of the four switch ports. Do not use a wlan connection!
GNU/Linux: How to configure your LAN Ethernet address to 192.168.1.100
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.100
Microsoft Windows™: How to configure your LAN Ethernet address to 192.168.1.100
1.Click Start
2.Click Control Panel
3.Double Click Network Connections
4.Under LAN or High-Speed Internet Doubleclick the enabled device (the Local Area Connection or the Wireless Network Connestion)
5.On the Status Box Window that opens Click the Properties button
6.Drag the Properties window beside the Status window
7.Click the Support tab on the Status window
8.Click the Details button--this window provides the information you will need to manually configure your IP
9.In the Properties window that you have open beside the Status windows scroll down through the devices until you get to Internet Protocol TCP/IP
10.Select Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click the properties button
11.In the Properties window that opens select "Use the following IP address"
12.If you have a number of machines begin by setting the IP address to 192.168.1.100 then go to 192.168.1.101 and so forth giving each machine a unique IP on the network
13.The subnet mask has a default value of 255.255.255.0 in most cases.
4.Disconnect the power cord from the WRT54GSv7.
5.Push the reset button while reconnecting the power cord and hold the button for about 20 seconds.
6.Open your browser to http://192.168.1.1/
7.Use the Firmware upgrade option under the Administration tab to flash vxworkskillerGSv7-v3.bin.
8.After the dialogue about disconnecting the power cord is shown, disconnect the power cord and reconnect it.
9.Wait for FIVE FULL minutes.
10.Again, disconnect the power cord and reconnect it.
11.Transfer the firmware using TFTP
Using GNU/Linux
tftp -v -m octet 192.168.1.1 -c put dd-wrt.v24-micro_generic.bin
Using Microsoft Windows™
1.If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you need to first enable the tftp client
2.Start up a Windows console by pressing Alt+F2 and typing "cmd" and press enter
3.Enter "tftp -i 192.168.1.1 put dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin" on your local Windows console and press enter.
12.The file will now be transferred and flashed to your router. After this is done, your router will boot automatically and you can reach it at http://192.168.1.1./
(Note: My WRT54GS V7.0 didn't boot automatically, and simply power-cycling didn't bring it up. Resetting as described in steps 4-5, holding reset while plugging in the power cord, brought the router from "no lights, no web interface" to "functioning dd-wrt install.")

On !. download the file.http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/08-12-10-r14929/broadcom/dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin - I tried to download but no such file.
On 2. I did downloaded the file (vxworkskillerGSv7-v3.bin)
On 7. It says upgrade with this file vxworkskillerGSv7-v3.bin. It's were I got stuck. It just won't upgrade
Thank you for trying to help. Actually I already gave up. Hoped this will help.

Talked tomelhernandez2 via PM and is still interested in getting his project up and running. Suggested that we do this forum so others will benefit from this.

So let us get to it:

Couple of questions;
Are you currently connected to the internet by another means?
What operating system are you running (Win Vista, Win XP, Linux, etc.)?
How are you trying to connect THIS WRT54Gs to the internet for reprogramming?
Thru another router?
Directly to the internet?

From hxxp://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index click on Router Database link (right side of page) and the next page enter WRT54GS into the query box. Below the query will be listed the versions of that router that are supported. From that listing click on your router version, in your case it will be 7.2.
On that linked page download to the folder of your choice the five files listed.

Downloaded DD-WRT How2 for Linksys WRT54GS v7.0 & 7.2

NOTE TO WINDOWS VISTA AND WINDOWS 7 USERS: By default the TFTP Client is disabled and you SHALL NOT PROCEED UNLESS YOU HAVE ENABLED IT. To enable: click the Start orb and type the following into the Start Search field: "features" (Without the " " of course, but you have to tell some people). At the top of the Windows Start Bar, you will see "Programs and Features;" click on that. In the left pane of the new window, click Turn Windows Features on or off. Scroll down through the Windows Features until you see TFTP Client. Select the option box and press OK.

Most routers default to the 192.168.1.1 address OR if you did not reconfigure your existing router its address could also probably also be the same, 192.168.1.1 So if you are going through you existing Dlink then you are probably logging in to the Dlink page. OKay I check the web and they say the Dlink default is 192.168.0.1 OR .30 OR .50 but could be reconfigured for 192.168.1.1.

So answer me this, when you log on to 192.168.1.1 what is your user id/password and what name is listed on the page; DLink, Linksys, DD-WRT?

Hi Poly,
Before I log in, I do disabled that Dlink(Model- D-Link WDA-1320) I think it's called range booster G desk top adapter. I think this model is now discontinued .I checked D-link and I saw this MODEL WDA-2320 RANGE BOSSTER ADAPTER and it's exactly the same.
When I log on to 192.168.1.1 dd-wrt is the screen the shows and I just changed the password (used to be admin/admin).
Yes D link still active. That's the only source where I got the internet signal.
I tried to check the IP on that Dlink but I can't find the IP. There is a FILE VERSION: 1.0.2.50503 that I saw don't know what that is.
To install or activate this D link, there is a diver that will walk you through it, all I need to know is the passcode from my neighbor and that's all about it. If only this Dlink has a slot (just like routers) I don't think there would be a problem. If you see this model you'll see what I'm talking about.
The purpose of this router is just to be a repeater.
Also, I tried to follow the instruction from this site under wifi repeater file.
Everything went OK except I can't find the site that I assigned so I can join in and continue the set up.
Thanks again

It appears that you logged in to the DD-WRT page and that you have DD-WRT loaded. When the first DD-WRT page comes up, usually on System Information, look to top right and you will see what version of DD-WRT you are running. Copy this down and let us know what it is.

You then can go to Status-->Wireless on the on bottom of page click on the SITE Survey button and again let us know if you see your buddies router. You can also try the Wiviz Survey (I believe it is called) to see again if you can see your buddies router. Be patient on the Wiviz site as it may take some time for the local wireless survey will show.

I think DD-WRT54GS/V8/V7 but not 7.2 for sure. I'll check it again

I did click on that SITE SURVEy but I did not see the name I assigned.

And the weird part was, when I go to D link and click on the wireless network that is availabe in our neighborhood, that name that I assigned was there unsecured.

Now I remembered, I followed the wifi repeater (in here) instruction. I just don't know why It's not appearing on that SITE SURVEY.

I went back to the DD-WRT forum and it appears that there are some radio issues (turning off after 5 minutes) with builds 13100 and below. So I would suggest going to the following site, hxxp://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database, and download the 14896 build bin. There is also another bin, purely beta, that people have reported very good things with; fXp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/V24_TNG/svn15943-snow/ and select the 15943 NEWD micro build.

These two bins are in beta so load them will be at your risk. Suggest if you do upgrade, only use the IE explorer to upgrade the bin of your choice and make sure you reread you installation guide on how to do the 30-30-30 and power resets beforehand. Take no shortcuts, be patience.

It says on the FIRMWARE: DD-WRTV24-SP2(10/10/09) Micro.

ROUTER MODEL WRT54GV8 / GSV7

Again I tried that WIFI Repeater instruction (10.0.0.1). When I do 192.168.1.1
then admin/admin - under set up, basic I followed that 10.0.0.1 and the next is to do repair on the LAN by right clicking and do repair.

When I tried to open that 10.0.0.1 on the new window, It 's not connecting.
I check the IP on the LAN it says 192.168.1.1.

My question is, since I did the 10.0.0.1 and did the repair, how come the IP still 192.168.1.1 instead of 10.0.0.1?

Some one else please chime in on this but I believe not all routers can access 10.10.10.1. Mostly used in the business end and not home routers BUT lets get back to problem #1 and that is you are using is known to have a radio problem CAN NOT "see" his network. Lets solve that problem first.

According to a previous post I made was that according to the DD-WRT forum the build of firmware you are using is known to have a radio problem so please update your firmware to build 14896 first. And again please refresh yourself on the 30-30-30 and power reset before doing so.

Man this is why I use these to connect to a WIFI,
http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=292 set it up once and forget it.

You can also add hi-gain external antennas.

10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.254 is in the private network pool, it should work.

If the network he is trying to receive is only 50 feet away and he cant see it then there is a problem with the WIFI receiver, unless he is behind a concrete wall or inside a metal building, or his house has the new IR wrapping on it (inside the walls), then the radio signals will have a very hard time getting inside.

Can he see the WIFI spot with just a laptop? (If he has one)

From a earlier post he did say that the Dlink could find the buddies network but not the linksys. I believe or hope anyway that upgrading to build 14896 would solve the problem as earlier builds have been reported to drop the radio after 5 minutes.

Thanks for the info on the 10.10 addy. Guess it is back to the net for some more learning....

Hi Terryl,
I'm receiving the internet signal from the DLink, although the signal is most of the time LOW signal. Maybe you're right about the wall thing, coz the router on the other house is located at the back house not the front. I'm assuming that there is a wall issue in my case with which it's pretty obvious why I'm having a problem.

Though my question is, why is it that when I check the neighborhood connection (Through my DLink) I can see the router name that I assigned. It's unsecured and the strength signal is very good.

I'll try what poly recommends.
Thanks

If your router has a removable antenna(s) then you can get a hi-gain antenna to replace the one that is on it now, but this is a two way street, your signal must be able to get back to the WIFI spot or you won't get a good link.

You could move things close to a window and see if it works better, also you could try one of these hummers.

Hi Terryl,
The antena is not removable. This is the closest area I can get. Let me try that hummers too and see what happens.
I thank you Guys for all your responses. I'm better now than the first time I started this WIFI course.
Thanks.

Hi Polly,
Tried to load 14896.
From 192.168.1.1 then password then firmware upgrade. When I load the 14896 it failed again. Is that the way to do it?

Are you connecting to 192.168.1.1using IE as an browser? Also make sure that the 14896 is a .bin file and not a .zip or .rar.

Is this basically the procedure that you are using? If so I would try and reload the file you currently using and then try again. Please make sure you are doing the 30-30-30 procedure before trying to upgrade.

1.) connect at 192.168.1.1.on browser
2.) Admin tab
3.) user id-blank, password admin, enter
4.) Firmware Upgrade tab
5.) browse button, select file on you PC
6.) upgrade button.
7.) wait 5 minutes after upgrade completes before continuing.

OK looking over everything again and I see one thing we are over looking, he is using a WRT54GS, it is not a router but a gateway, it is already setup to receive a WIFI signal and repeat it.

It's stock factory IP default address is 192.168.16.1 not 192.168.1.1 as a standard router would be.

Here is a setup guide that may help him out a bit.

http://homedownloads.cisco.com/downloads/userguide/1224638340648/WTR54GSv2A_ug.pdf

And his internal WIFI adapters IP address in his PC would have to be set to 192.168.16.2 to access it.

So in the PC the following settings would be needed.

IP address = 192.168.16.2
Sub net mask = 255.255.255.0
Gateway = 192.168.16.1
DNS is set to what ever your ISP supplies.

Holy cow Batman, boy I did miss that....sheesh. From your link I did find this;
How to Access the Web-based Utility
To access the Web-based Utility, launch Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, and enter the Router’s default IP
address, 192.168.16.1, in the Address field. Then press Enter.
A password request page will appear. Leave the User Name field blank. The first time you open the Web-based
Utility, use the default password admin.Duh feel like an idiot. Sorry about that melhernandez2 and thanks Terryl for catching that. I guess that is why you get the big bucks;)

OK my bad, I transposed the WRT with the WTR, time for new tri-focals.

Sorry guys.

But he should check his serial number as there is a version 5 of this router that is incompatible with some 3rd party software (according to Linksys) if the serial number has a CGN7 prefix in it may be his problem.

Your red notation above about VxworkskillerGS7-v3, are you just saying that you loaded this bin before the micro bin?

Also have you tried to load the micro bin again and did you use the browser or tftp program to load the bins?

If you have defaulted your router then on your wireless page make sure you are in the AP mode with BG mixed (unless neighbor has an N router) and wireless channel in AUTO.

If you have to change any of these do an all save and router will reboot (~ 2minutes), watch the lights) and after that unplug power for 30 seconds, plug back in and then go to Status-->Wireless-->Site survey again to see if you buddies router shows up.

Yes I loaded that first. About AP mode.... I have to check it. No to browser nor tftp to load micro, I have never tried to load that because Vx won't upgrade. Correct me if I'm wrong.

What is a prep bin?
This is how I got this bin.file (see below) I just click that killergdv7-3.bin.
METHOD FOR EOC, INTEL, AND POSSIBLY OTHER FLASH CHIPS

1.First download this file: http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downl...ro_generic.bin
2.You will also need: http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downl...lerGSv7-v3.bin 3.Configure your local LAN ethernet address to 192.168.1.100 and connect your local ethernet to your WRT54GSv7 on one of the four switch ports. Do not use a wlan connection!
GNU/Linux: How to configure your LAN Ethernet address to 192.168.1.100
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.100

Last night I tried again to do the WIFI repeater. Please read below.
I DID THE FIRM UPGRADE by using the micro generic 2 from 14896 successfully. I tried to load also the VxworkskillerGSv7-v3 but failed. I did continue to follow the WIFI Repeater instruction and this is what happened.
When I did the 10.0.0.1, on the top portion of the bar it says: myroutername (BUILD-14896) – SET UP. I guess I successfully upgrade from old to 14896.

After follwing the WIFI repeater instruction, it ended up not finding the buddy name under SITE Survey.

Below is the reading. Please analyze what is wrong. If everything is right, then my inkling is that I’m receiving a very low signal from the host router.

I would say you are very lucky that you have not bricked your router by not loading VxworkskillerGSv7-v3 first.

Okay 1st things first. I see you have a SSID, security (WPA etc) enabled but if your buddies is not broadcasting his SSID then you will not see it (although you said your Dlink seen the network). We need to have you go back to do a router default and go back to normal AP mode.
We need for you to FIRST be able to see his network before you do anything else. BTW in site survey mode can you see other networks?

Please edit out the last couple of numbers from your MAC address. This can be like a telephone number.

I went back and re-read this thread and found out that you must load the Vxworks bin or its equivalent cfe.bin to this this router to work correctly. So you need to get the VXworks bin loaded and then the micro bin.
