Confused on Private Server and security

I have bin in this hobby for a while and have always been very great-full for the advice and wisdom of the members of this site and the the former members of bins that directed me here. Now when all this private started we were well warned to stay away to protect ourselves. Now that it is time to move on to a new stb it seams that private is the accepted way to go. I am confused, do I but a new stb for public or do I take the risk and go private. I do understand that nothing is safe in this hobby, but have they figured out a way to protect our personal info on a paid server? I would think that as a end user if we are paying for the service through somebody other than the provider than we would be a bigger target than if we were using a public server. I guess the real ? is how do you go about setting up a account on private the safest way [ payment registration and that kinda stuff ]. I ask here instead of paid iks forum because I am looking for a unbiased opinion.

Simple answer, your info + the internet = not secure. Sorry to be blunt, but that is the way it is. If you want to go with IKS either paid/private or public, all you can do is read up on how each server is run, and what other users have to say. Again I have to say that anyone who tells you that any of these services is bullet proof safe is not being truthful, or simply does not know better. Also, I am going to move this thread to Chit Chat Louge as it really has nothing to do with Nano 2.

You are absolutely correct in that point But as Spaz says if you are hooked to the internet then you could be tracked
As far as our stance on PS I dont think that changed but for some of the nano2 owners that cant/wont buy a different receiver we just showed them that this option is available it has to be there decision to take that road

I dont know how much I would trust anyone on Ebay for codes as the authorized resellers codes starts when you pay for them But if someone buys a bunch of codes and resells them those codes have started when he/she Bought them so they could be months old when get them
Go down to the paid section There is resellers down there that can more than likely explain more procedures for you

You havent heard of Dark Angel then have you He had a PS and was busted and gave up records end users where served

Yep, sure have heard of them and yes they will help. However, all of the methods above are kind of like using a proxy server. It's a false sense of security, and if someone wants to cut through all those methods to find you than they will. As for using someone else's wifi, better hope they don't actually check their router logs. I know I would be suspicious of some unknown IP addy with a constant connection to my service. If you have multiple wifi signals to choose from in your area and frequently switch them up, that would be better imo. Still the question was "what is safe?", and none of this is safe.

Thanks for your input Arshlep If you are going to buy a new stb why not cover both types of servers. At the time of your purchase make sure whatever receiver you purchase will work on both public and private. Everything after that point is a crapshoot. Even the Satzen 500 now works off public and private but supposedy been discontinued being manufactured now. And it has not been out that long. The game is a changing. Just make your purchase based on how it works at that time. Things can change quickly now. Nothing is forever. JMHO
