By William Mackay: I don’t like the idea of 33-year-old Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KO’s) being given an immediate title shot against WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto with Margarito coming off of a brutal 12 round decision loss to Manny Pacquiao last November. For one, I don’t like the idea of fighters that once were fighting well being given a title shot when they just got whipped. They seems so wrong to let someone fight for a title right after they’ve been soundly beaten.
I mean come on, they should at least have to fight someone good and show that they’re back and not rewarded with a straight title shot coming off of a loss. That turns boxing into a popularity contest rather than an actual sport where you work hard, get pushed up the rankings and then get a much deserved title shot after you’ve earned it. Last time I checked, Margarito has lost two out of his last three fights. How in the world can Margarito be given a title shot after that kind of lousy record in his last three fights?
Margarito isn’t ranked in the top 15 by the WBA. How does the top contenders like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Erislandy Lara, Pawel Wolak, Ryan Rhodes, and Anthony Mundine feel about Margarito getting a title shot against Cotto when he’s coming off of a loss, has two defeats in his last three fights, and isn’t even ranked in the top 15 by the WBA. I know I wouldn’t be happy. But besides that, Margarito looks nothing like he once did in 2008 when he beat Cotto. Margarito has lost a lot of hand speed and fights like he’s fighting in slow motion.
I don’t care if his promoter Bob Arum wants to get a money fight with these two guys, Margarito should at least have to beat a top contender to get a title shot and not be rewarded coming off of a loss by giving him an undeserved shot at a belt. He should be ranked in the top 15 by the sanctioning body that he’s going after the title. It just seems like some kind of old timers fight between a fighter that is prematurely shot.

I pretty much agree with the above.... but the answer to the question.. why?
Is a simple answer... MONEY!
Margarito just about killed Cotto the first time.... Cotto quit on a knee.... which is
pretty much unheard of...
And of course Cotto's style is made to order for Margarito...
HOWEVER,,,,,, Margarito is a shot fighter, probably has brain damage by now....
It would be billed as a grudge, get even match.
Cotto has done well since. I would pick Cotto in this one.
But,,, Cotto taking a chance, Margarito is shot,, but the last thing to go in a fighter
is his punch. And Margarito can still hit.. I am sure the blows he took in the first fight
are still on Cotto's mind. He took quite a beating.
The fight will draw, Mexicans vs Puerto Ricans always do.
Maybe in Dallas?
I think the fight would be worth watching... I would take Cotto,,,, but not without
him taking some heavy duty shots. Maybe even go down a time or two.
Margarito is a shot fighter though. Cotto should win.

This fight would draw huge revenue.I would say he does deserve it.As far as Margarito being shot,i highly doubt it.Cotto has taken much severe beatings than Margarito, and at the hands of Pacquaio and Antonio himself. The reason it draws intrest is because it's a decent matchup and thats what i personally like to see.

For once, I agree with the writer and also the points raised above by Rudee and Todd.
However, let us look at some "agonizing" facts:
1) Margarito is not ranked as a title contender; therefore, does not deserve a title match
2) Arum is a sly fox and knows when there is money to be made
3) The continuing rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico is alive and well and will bring out fans from both sides
4) Cotto is eager to get a revenge, in the ring or on the streets
That is how it is in sports these days. No longer is this an "elimination" match to determine who moves up in rank; it is a much anticipated rematch in a level playing field. In golf, there are many young talented ball strikers winning PGA tournaments BUT TV viewing and revenues are clearly the highest when Tiger plays. So throw out the window the concept of "getting fights between contenders" because nowadays some contenders just don't sell tickets.

you also need to understand that on the first fight margarito vs cotto, margarito beat cotto so bad because he had his gloves loaded, you never know margarito probably had his gloves loaded with illegal stuff in it,i will take cotto on this one, cotto will remember the beating he took on the first fight,,

This is exactly what we want to clear up, Antonio doesn't deserve a shot but we need to know once and for all. After this, Arum must give Cotto a rematch against Paquiao for the welterweight crown. Since he won't come up to 154, Miguel will go down to 147, even.

All fights should be fought on a level playing field.Margarito served his suspension and thats old news. Also it really dosen't matter if Margarito is not ranked as a title contender.Arum will make this happen for the dough. But in all actuality this is a decent rematch, and has the grudge factor invovled as well. And i personally would like to see this fight happen regardless.Jmo:thumbsup:

I happened to agreed with you Hamburger man, this one is personal. He could have killed someone with his dirty trick but he didn't so Cotto will settle this one by beating him and send him to an early retirement. I also want to see this one, the sooner the better.

Margarito's gloves were loaded in the fight with Shane... noone ever said they were loaded when he beat Cotto... and... its up to Shane or Cotto's corner to see the wrapping of the gloves.. the opposing side always has a rep there to oversee this.
If he didnt.. then he didnt do his job.
Aquarius is totally right... both fighters have come off some big recent beatings...
This fight will be more a people viewing fight than a contender bout. Both fighters
have taken recent beatings... Cotto has a couple of nice wins since.
Margarito has taken big beatings since the Cotto win.
Neither fighter is really championship material in my mind..
But tossing em together again would certainly make a good fans fight.
Again,, will depend who has regressed the most... They both stand to make tons
of dough though. Hope they save it.

I assure you he was doing this for a while, if you saw the fight, those punches were definitely loaded. No one ever before cut Cotto that way. Experts in boxing did comment about this, his loss to Mosley demonstrated his inability to cause that type of damage without his dirty trick. Cotto has 2 defeats, and you consider him a washed out pugilist, come on rudee. Pacman has more loses and so does Martinez who was ko by Margarito. Cotto holds a belt. With all due respect, you don't know what your talking about.

yup, one loss to pacquiao and all washed up... Also cotto has manuel steward in his corner,, greatest training going... cotto will dispose of marguito with easy.. I watched cottos last fight and his foot work is awsome, he is actually a boxer now, jabs and crosses and he uses his left hook again to the body.. steward has brought back the old cotto again... plus some inprovements, should be a very easy win for him against margacheeto...

Fibroso,,,, first of all,,, let me say i think yer biased. Never met a PR fighter ya didnt like.
Second of all,,, unless you can prove Margaritos gloves were loaded when he knocked out Cotto,, you have NO right to talk. And,, why couldnt Cotto knock out Margarito?
He hit him with everything but the stool...
Cotto has taken 2 BIG beatings.... as I said... he quit on one knee against Margarito...
I have never in recent memory seen a champion do that. At least they lie down.
Hope we can PM each other IF Cotto ever fights Manny again...
We can put up pink slips... doubt very much if Cotto wants any part of Manny.
Actually,,, I dont even think he wants Margarito again.... Margaritio dying for a rematch.
As far as not knowing what I am talking about,,, I made tons of dough on the Trinidad vs Hopkins fight.... so i knew just enough there.
Lets discuss things with our minds,,, not with our hearts. We make more sense that way.
Think i am one step ahead of you there guy.

delahoya quit on his stool, as for his gloves being loaded, your right there is no proof about that... it would be a great rematch, cotto is a totally different boxer now that he is being trained buy the great emanuel steward.. enough said.. He will beat margacheeto, and i am willing to do a side bet with you, take some of your winnings from the trinadad and hopkins winnings you made.. lmao... just kidding..:tehe:

No no, lets not go away so fast. Cotto hit Antonio all over the face but never hit him in the side of the head including the ears. That was the case in the Paquiao's fight. He also didn't ko Antonio although he fracture his face. Antonio's face is hard and Mosley proofed that his ears are the weakest link. When Cotto tired down a bit, got caught by a few punches that cut the live out of him, especially inside the mouth and nose. He got hit with a concrete block, no doubt about it. It took lots of stiches to close. Manny got hit in the later rounds but the concrete effect was not there. Sure Margarito wants the rematch (pay day). Like Cotto wants Paquiao........ I also made a lot of money in the Trinidad/ Hopking fight.......................
