THE LATEST ON ARUM, GBP, SCHAEFER, and DONAIRE SAGA

Without much news about particular boxers or boxing matches these days, mud-slinging between Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotion seem to occupy boxing news. You are most likely already aware that this new brawl all started just two weeks ago when it was announced that newly crowned Bantamweight Champ Nonito Donaire signed with GBP.

Why is this newsworthy? Well, when Donaire was interviewed after his sensational KO of Montiel about how he felt “being number two” to Manny Pacquiao, his reply was candidly humble, “I am proud to be number two behind Manny!” It was a tactful response since he had an existing contract with Arum.

Obviously, Rachel Donaire, his wife, had different sentiments. She felt very strongly aghast that Nonito under Arum was not set up to fight “three times a year” as she alleges the contract to state. It is believe in all circles that Rachel is responsible for Donaire crossing the floor to Arum’s nemesis – Dela Hoya & GBP! But there is really more background to all this.

Similarities between Pacquiao and Donaire:
1) Both were born in the Philippines and grew up in General Santos, Philippines
2) They attended the same the same school
3) They are world title holders
4) They both have an exciting style of offensive non-stop boxing
5) Both of their accomplishments are celebrated in the Philippines
6) Both are ranked in the top five of the best pound-for-pound boxers’ list

However, that is where most similarities end – somewhat. Donaire left his home country when he was 11 years old. His father inspired his boxing career and managed his early bouts as a professional boxer. He became a naturalized American citizen and in 2008 married Rachel Marcial who is a Filipino-American USA National Collegiate and Military Taekwando Champion.

Because of his wife’s personal interests in contact sports, she has taken on a more active role in Nonito’s career. For the records, Donaire has not lost since 2008. And yes, Donaire is so much in love. Who wouldn’t? She is quite a knock-out lady to die for. However, the question is, does that sultry look come with superb business acumen needed to carefully weave a successful career for such a talent?

Unfortunately, the consequences of her “strong influence” and public behavior are quite telling. Schaefer and GBP dangled a carrot worth $750 grand to lure Donaire to their camp. Arum and Top Rank guarantees a purse of half a million. Donaire signs with GBP hoping to get into the ring on May 28, 2011 “against someone” causing Arum to go caustic and files a case against both Donaire and GBP. BIG MISTAKE! Now everything is in limbo. With any sort of legal arbitration or intervention, Nonito is not likely to get in the ring. Poof!!! goes the “promise” of a bigger payday and impeding an otherwise exciting prospect for someone who could conceivably inherit Manny Pacquiao’s crown one day.

The saying goes that “for every successful man is a woman” might be true but it could also work in contrary. Rachel’s rant on public TV in the Philippines against Jinkee, Manny’s wife, shows great jealousy. Her blogs on Nonito Donaire’s official website (filipinoflash.com) demonstrate a very intense and outspoken reckless personality quite contrary to the Maria Clara ideals that Filipino women are demurely well-known for.

For Nonito Donaire to inherit Pacquiao’s crown, he must not only earn the admiration of the entire world for his boxing prowess but also endear himself to the hearts of people in his native land. It is work in progress that “love” is not making easy. The bubble is about to burst if Top Rank, GBP, AND Rachel Marchial’ greed prevails.

Now that Phonetool has updated us on the dispute between Top Rank and Golden Boy concerning Nonito Donaire, what consequences are there to bear?

With the arbiter ruling in favor of Top Rank, clearly there would be a lot "damage control" that faces both Nonito and Rachel. To begin with, here are some statistics in terms of popularity:
1) Amongst American Hardcore boxing fans 4.9% (Pacquiao - 92.8%)
2) Amongst Pilipino Boxing fans - 9.6% (Pacquiao - 98%)
3) Amongst quasi-boxing fans - 0% (Pacquiao - 92.1%)
(Source: Granville Ampong)

What this means is that as great a prospect Donaire is in the "pound-for-pound" ranking, he does not yet command PPV star ranking. Therefore, signing with Golden Boy, and now returning to Top Rank clearly indicate how "reckless" both he and his wife are in "building his career".

What sours Donaire and his wife to the public (especially the Pilipinos) is their attitude outside the ring. "You don't bite the hand that feeds you," goes the saying.

TOP RANK invested a lot of money in promoting Donaire and other Pilipino boxers - through "PINOY POWER (1,2,3). It is known that Arum did not make money in those ventures but it catapulted Donaire and others into the international boxing arena. it is also public knowledge how Donaire's father worked very hard to bring up his sons (Nonito and Glen) to become champions. But, money and other matters interfered that broke up Nonito's relationship with his father. Rachel added fuel to the fire with her public declarations about the problem - which should have remained private.

Now that Donaire is back with Top Rank, there is a lot of "damage control" to be done. He needs a "good public relations" agent to re-shape his image and build it to where it should be. That task requires a professional. A supportive wife should very well know when to leave business management to those who know how.
