posted By Sean McDaniel: Next weeks’ bout between WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) and Paul McCloskey (22-0, 12 KO’s) will be shown on Sky Sports 3 rather than pay-per-view. This comes after the news that heavyweight prospect Tyson Fury’s bout with Hasim Rahman is off the card. The Fury-Rahman fight was one of the best fights on the entire card, perhaps even better than the Khan-McCloskey bout.
By having the fight off PPV, Khan’s purse may drop dramatically from £1.25 to something near £250,000. He probably isn’t too happy about that, but what can you say? It’s unfortunate but the card seems to lack any other big named fighters and the fights seem to be less than eye-catching. The Fury-Rahman fight was the glue that made this card work and without it there’s only the Khan-McCloskey fight, which appears to be a case of Khan fighting a hand-picked opponent without hand speed or the kind of power that would worry Khan. It’s a mismatch and few people want to see this fight. Khan could have fought a rematch with Marcos Maidana and the fight would have been huge.
This didn’t have to be this way. Khan had an opportunity to fight knockout artist Bredis Prescott in a rematch. However, Khan and his team opted for the little known McCloskey, even though Prescott knocked Khan out in one round in 2008. My guess is if the Khan-Prescott rematch was happening it wouldn’t matter if the card lost a fight like Rahman-Fury; The card would still likely be PPV, because of all the interest there would be in seeing whether Khan could avenge his defeat against Prescott. Perhaps this is what happens when you opt to take a safe fight against a fighter without power or notoriety instead of taking a fight that boxing fans would prefer to see. .
