Posted By Chris Williams: IBF light welterweight champion Zab Judah (41-6, 28 KO’s) has reportedly started negotiations with lightweight Juan Manuel Marquez (52-5-1, 38 KO’s) for a bout that will be taking place in July at light welterweight. It will be the 33-year-old Judah’s first defense of his International Boxing Federation title that he capture last March with a 7th round TKO over South African Kaizer Mabuza.
Judah has been eyeing a fight with Marquez ever since Judah won the IBF title, and it looks like he may finally be getting his wish to fight Marquez. However, there may be some competition for Marquez because the recently beaten Erik Morales is still interested in fighting Marquez. No doubt Morales didn’t help himself by losig his fight last weekend against Marcos Maidana, but it was an impressive enough performance by Morales to make a case that he should have won the fight. Indeed, many boxing fans felt that at the very least Morales should have been given a draw. That’s pretty impressive given that he was fighting what many boxing fans feel is the biggest puncher in the light welterweight division in Maidana. If Marquez does fight Judah, it would likely only be to capture his IBF paper title so that Marquez could win a 4th world title. That would be the only real benefit to fighting Judah, because Morales would seem to be the bigger fight for Marquez compared to Judah, who doesn’t have much of a fanbase due to his inactivity and many losses in the past five years.
