Posted By Dan Ambrose: #4 ranked IBF contender Lamont Peterson (26-1, 18 KO’s) faces #3 ranked contender Victor Cayo (28-1-1, 14 KO’s) on April 29th in an IBF light welterweight title eliminator bout at the Cosmopolitan Resort, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
You would have to figure that the 27-year-old Peterson would be the favorite here. He’s been in with the better fighters in bouts against Timothy Bradley and Victor Ortiz. However, Peterson didn’t exactly shine in either of those fights. Peterson was easily beaten in a one-sided 12 round decision loss to Bradley in December 2009, and was getting pummeled by Ortiz last December until Ortiz suddenly stopped fighting and started running after the 4th. Peterson is very beatable.

Cayo looked decent in losing to Marcos Maidana last year in a 6th round TKO loss in March 2010. Cayo took the fight to Maidana and was trading shot for shot until getting taken out in the 6th.
I liked Cayo’s power and work rate in that fight. He’s definitely an entertaining fighter with decent power and boxing skills. Cayo could pull off a mini upset against Peterson and be the one to get a title shot against IBF champion Zab Judah in the future.
Peterson is a good fighter, but he’s missing power and size. He’s going to continue to have problems in the future when he faces better opposition. I don’t know if Cayo will be the one to hand him another loss, but I wouldn’t be the least surprised if Peterson gets beaten again.
