Satellite : The Military And Satellites
• Dan Losada, senior director of the Defense & Intelligence Systems for Hughes Networking Solutions, is scheduled to participate in the Satellite Industry Association's (SIA) Department of Defense (DoD) Commercial SATCOM Users' Workshop. Losada plans to address how Hughes will optimize the military and intelligence communities. The workshop will take place December 9 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia.
In other satellite/military news, ITT Corp has received a contract from the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Dahlgren Division to supply 1,450 Iridium-based handheld tactical satellite communication devices for use by U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. For the $9.7 million contract, ITT will manufacturer the Distributed Tactical Communications Systems - Radio Only (DTCS-RO) transceivers by March 2010.
Moreover, Arianespace’s Ariane 5 flight of 2009 has entered final preparations for its liftoff next week with France’s Helios 2B military observation satellite. The launch is scheduled for December 9 at 1:26 p.m.
• The ETSI Broadband Satellite Multimedia Working Group has issued a new technical report on Performance Enhancing Proxies, which are used in satellite networks to improve the performance of the Internet protocols. The report provided a review of satellite compatible PEP architectures and a security analysis that describes security solutions that can be used with PEPs.
• Nielsen announced that it will be creating a National People Meter panel to measure TV and online consumption of video content. This new data will be rolled out beginning December 23 and finishing by August 31, 2010. This move will allow the company to measure TV Everywhere-type content and other online video business models.
• The Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) announced that DIRECTV has been added as the newest Promoter Member for the organization. As a member DIRECTV will join the existing DLNA members in implementing the Alliance's vision of connecting the digital home with DLNA Certified products which will help consumers manage their electronic devices regardless of the manufacturer.
• Several companies including AT&T, Google, Microsoft and Verizon are asking legislators to establish a law that all IP services should be subject to federal jurisdiction. The companies note that the FCC agrees that this type of regulation should be on the federal level referencing its 2000 Vonage decision concluding that VoIP is interstate and subject to the FCC's exclusive jurisdiction.•
