Posted By Dan Ambrose: WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz is eying Floyd Mayweather Jr. or a title defense against his mandatory challenger Selcuk Aydin for his first defense of Ortiz’s newly won World Boxing Council title. Ortiz, 24, defeated champion Andre Berto last week, beating him by a close 12 round unanimous decision win.
Berto’s promoter Lou Dibella wants a rematch with Ortiz for Berto. However, he recognizes that the rematch may not happen next because Ortiz is likely going to go for the best possible fight he can get before taking on a tough fighter like Berto in a rematch. Berto and Ortiz exchanged knockdowns in their fights with both of them going down twice. Both fighters were hurt in that fight. However, Berto took a lot of punishment while against the ropes and looked to be exhausted after the 6th. Ortiz has his way from the 7th on and only had to worry about an occasional big punch from Berto.
Golden Boy Promotions, the promoter for Ortiz, likes the idea of matching him against Mayweather. That’s a fight they will at least try to make. Mayweather was at the Ortiz-Berto fight watching the action. He left early before seeing Ortiz win the fight. Mayweather knows how much trouble Ortiz would be from seeing that fight and he might not want to mix it up with someone as young and powerful as Ortiz.
In the past couple of years, Mayweather has beaten a smaller Juan Manuel Marquez and older 39-yeaar-old Shane Mosley. Those are good fighters but neither is as young and powerful as Ortiz. This would be a very tough fight for Mayweather if he were to take the fight.
If Berto doesn’t get the immediate rematch with Ortiz, his promoter is going to need to find someone for him to take on while he waits for the rematch. It’s going to be interesting to see if Berto will be matched tough or be put back in with some of the same type of soft opposition that he’s been facing off and on for the past three years.

Thanks for the post....
Mayweather would kill Berto.. Berto is made to order for Mayweather... a one handed fighter with a weak chin and not much stamina...
Would be an excellent tune up bout for Mayweather though... He is way too fast for Berto.. would knock him out or win decisively..
Mayweather left the fight early eh? just showcasing. get on tv. get back on people's minds.
Which he did. Hell,,, we already talking about him again.
I actually do want to see him fight again. He is a good fighter. Not a good person, but a good fighter.

Thats a possibility since dela hoya promotes him.But I doubt hbo will be willing to accept that fight. You ask me its to weak of a fight.Malignaggi could not win at 140 and at 147 he does not beat any of the guys with belts. There is a mandantory fight out there other than a rematch with berto.I wouldnt mind seeing mayweather in the ring vs ortiz.Bob arum is not in the picture here.Maybe dela hoya gets something done.

Paulie is a good club fighter.. didnt Khan knock him silly? he has taken some big beatings against top fighters... guy is a measuring stick. Use to callem Trial Horse fighter
For those who remember,,, the George Chuvalo type fighter... puts up a good fight but always loses.. (against quality fighters)
Dont know why Oscar signed him.
One of his biggest flaws is he couldnt break an egg with a sledge hammer.
I sure as hell wouldnt pay to see him. Ortiz has to fight quality fighters now that he is hot.... cant regress. Noone will remember him beating Paulie.
But they do remember him beating Berto....

Wow, you impressed me with your metaphorical skills! What a picturesque description of Malignaggi! I would agree and disagree with you on these points:
1) On "Mayweather would kill Berto": Not! Andre Berto would give Mayweather a run for his money. Anyone going against Boy Floyd would have one great motivation - be the first to break that 0 loss record. Let me tell you why. Mayweather does not like to fight "in close". He wants to keep his distance so that he could dance, hit, and run. Berto is deadly fighting outside. (Ortiz knew that which is why he brought the fight inside.) I would give Berto a 50-50 chance with Mayweather.
2) On Paulie and Victor Ortiz: I am with you on this one. I would not spend a penny on this match. I don't suppose HBO would want anything to do with this. There is slim pickings in this division that would create excitement. One explosive possibility is Victor moving up to 154#s and challenge either Miguel Cotto or Saul Alvarez. He could make a name for himself. I don't see that happening soon as I am sure, Ortiz would want to milk the welterweight division for some serious bucks first to pad his confidence and sharpen his skills further.

My 2 cents on this, Mayweather would beat both of them, probably at the same time. They wont even touch his face. Floyd's defense will not let either of them even touch him. He's bigger, faster, and totaly out of reach for both. That's probably why he was laughing it out the night of the fight, thinking maybe to take on the winner. Being HBO's main boxer, he's got the right to chose his opponent. JMO

I would agree with the Fib on this one..... I saw lotsa flaws in Berto.. dont think Mayweather would let him wind up with the right hand.. and thats all he has.
But time will tell.. lets sign em up. Good payday for Berto. Course alot depends on what kinda shape Mayweather comes to the ring in.
I just dont understand why Mayweather doesn't go UP in weight. Look how much bigger he looks than his opponents. Hell, he came in over 160 against Hatton and Marquez.
As for Ortiz.... would just love to see him and Cotto go at it. Now that match i would pay for. Be some fireworks in that one.
As I said, Ortiz gotta strike while the iron is hot. He has had some stinkers. Can't be fighting nonames.

Never mind going up in weight! He should simply go up....in the ring!!~!

Why not go up to middleweight or junior middleweight? I can give you a few reasons: #1 reason: Sergio Martinez. Then there...

Thank you rudee, Mayweather is superior than Berto, Ortiz or anyone in 147 pounds that decides to challenge him. Floyd always trains well for all his fights, he may be crazy out in the street but when it comes to training, he's flawless. About Cotto, yea, that would be a good one after the rematches with Margarito and Paquiao. No matter what the outcome of these fights and depending of Cotto's future plans. Remember that he's gone have a huge pay day after the Paquiao rematch.

Ha ha ha!! good point Aqua,,, I like the way you think. Those boys in higher weights are just as big or bigger than Mayweather,, hit harder and can take a bigger punch..
Since Mayweather has the big weight advantage at bell time against the smaller guys, he has the big advantage,, especially with his speed. He is one very fast fighter.
You do not see Mayweather get hit with clean shots very often.
No matter what we all think about him as a person,,,, he is a damn good fighter. His record speaks for itself. He has made very good boxers look very bad in the ring.
Most notably Shane and Marquez... started Hatton on his downward spiral.
I have posted before and will touch on it again.... I would have to think long and hard on a Mayweather vs Manny winner. Both super fighters.
Reminds me very much of the first Hearns vs Sugar Leonard fight. Also the Hagler vs Sugar Leonard fight...
It was pickem!!! Would be very very interesting what the odds in Vegas would be on a Manny vs Mayweather fight.
Ha ha ha!!! see! power of suggestion... all Mayweather has to do is show up at the fights and tv for 5 rounds... and we all start talking about him again.
Lets hope he climbs back in the ring again.
Any word on who Cotto will fight next Fib? He and Ortiz would fill it up in P.R.

Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on where one stands, Pacquiao/Mosley may be Pacquiao penultimate fight, regardless of Roach or Arum's plans. Win or lose, he would have one last fight. If the powers that be can't get Mayweather to face him, there would be one more sweepstakes bout "for some boxer who is really lucky". He is really getting pretty serious about his political life. So far, as a congressman, he has earned great respect this early in his "other" career. He could seriously contend for Presidency in 2014 or 2018. He has also been extremely meticulous with his finances and with his net worth closing in on $100 million, only pride would move him to rumble with Mayweather IF and WHEN Floyd decides to gamble his zero record (which I doubt).
OPS!!!! off topic!

Again,,, you hit the nail on the head Aqua... Manny's ambitions now lie with being the president of the Philipines... he is very loyal to his country and loves living there.
Most foreign athletes come here to perform and never leave. he is a rarity. Loves his country and wants to serve it..
I totally admire him for that.
That fire in his belly for Mayweather may wane soon. I would not blame him one bit. You can only wait so long. Plus we all getting older.
My mailman,, who is Filipino and was Flash Elorde's neighbor for a long time.. (who i met by the way) just got back from the Philipine's.. says the talk there is already
about Manny running for prez. Not much excitement over there for the Shane fight. None for the Mayweather fight if there ever is one.
He says Eric M. has been in a couple Philipino movies. I guess Eric and Manny became very good friends when Eric went over there.
Off topic again.. ha ha ha! sorry.

Yes, you got that right! Eric Morales has become a very good friend of Manny. Inside the ring, Pacman works diligently like a good worker ("It is my job!" he says). Thus, regardless of who the opponent is, you can expect him to be at his best. However, when the bell ends the fight, he embraces his adversary as he would his good friend - genuinely. He is like that in private life, a very likable fellow with hardly a mean bone. Therein lies the secret to his charisma.
By the way, my crystal ball says that come September, you will see a mega-fight: Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez. Although a "rematch clause" would most likely be negotiated "in case JMM wins", it will be Manny's Swan song and there will be no rematch. This time he will erase all lingering doubts that JMM "was winner twice" during their clash a few years ago. He will send him down for good and JMM will be counted out.
Victor Ortiz enjoyed his dominance of Andre Berto and looks forward to the defense of the title he won!
(See.......not off topic anymore.....hahahahahaha!)

I was rooting for Manny over Marquez and still will be if there is a rematch... actually,,,, all my mex/american boxing fans always root for Manny...
As i posted before, Marquez is not very popular even with his own countrymen. I have seen most of his fights. He has NEVER given his opponent
any credit at all. Even when Mayweather beat the crap outta him... His first words were... he cheated,,, he came in too heavy!!!!
Hell,, he got an extra $600,000 Plus he didnt have to fight! He also thinks he beat Manny all the times they have fought... and gave Manny NO credit at all.
Will NOT fight in Mexico... probably cuz he knows he won't draw.
Manny will knock Marquez out next time... too too big for him now.
Go Victor go!!!! I'm a big fan!! Berto again? Ortiz and Paulie will not draw... unless HBO pays for it. Give Ortiz Buffer's money
and let Lennon do the announcing!!! Jimmy Lennon was the best announcer ever!!!
