Securing your network is just a precaution to keep the 12 year old down the street from connecting or a passer-byer, but if someone wants onto your network bad enough they usually can get to it. It may be as simple as trying your phone number, address, and last name as the password or as complicated as capturing packets and using them to slip on.

In reality, it's kinda like leaving your car window down when you run into the store- 99.999% of the time the car will be there when you return. But there's that little percentage that equals someone's leading 20 cops down the interstate in a high speed pursuit lol'ol
