Shane Mosley Could be a Risk for Manny Pacquiao
Published by Staff on May 3rd, 2011

Shane Mosley is an underdog Saturday night in Las Vegas. And Manny Pacquiao, the huge favorite, as he always is, won't have an easy fight. There won't be an early knockout and Mosley offers that experience and style to make this a fight that will keep Pacquiao busy.
We are a few days from the anticipated fight that has sparked interest because it is Manny Pacquio and there will be those who offer their analysis. Mosley is not concerned about being the underdog saying last week, "What matters is what happens in the ring." Bob Arum, promoter of Top Rank and Pacquiao went with Mosley. "He has the experience and we are in the business of entertainment," he said last week.
Meaning Mosley, will not sit down and allow Pacquiao to throw punches, and Mosley will not go down easy. The 39-year old three-division champion knows this will be a defining fight of his career and to continue on the fight with Pacquiao could tell where he goes from there.

"Anytime Pacquiao is there it is a good fight," commented Bert Sugar, author and historian. The Buster Douglas upset over Mike Tyson at the Tokyo Dome in Japan, is, the fight he and Teddy Atlas list as the Biggest Boxing Upset in their book, "The Ultimate Book of Boxing Lists." But, like Sugar, many don't expect Mosley to erase that image of Tyson going down to Douglas.
"The question is how much does, he have it?" says Sugar about Mosley. He brings up the snooze fest that Mosley had with Sergio Mora, a draw that had everyone questioning why, would Mosley take this fight with Pacquiao? Because everyone with an opportunity will get in the ring with Manny Pacquiao, and Mosley knows this is a defining moment.

And there is the aura of Floyd Mayweather Jr. "Right now Mayweather is hiding in his mansion and waiting to come out of semi-retirement," says Sugar. So if Mosley does what he expects to do, defeat Pacquiao, there goes the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight the boxing world has anticipated. But as much as this may be a potential defining moment for Mosley, and as much as this could be that risk type of fight for Pacquiao, Mosley is the underdog as Mayweather sits back and makes his decision.
Mosley says his loss to Mayweather and the fight with Mora got him Pacquiao. He is no longer associated with Golden Boy Promotions which made it easier for Arum to get him the fight with Pacquiao. You hear Freddie Roach, the Hall of Fame trainer of Pacquiao, tell the world that his fighter has had the most intense training camp of his career.
Last week the questions were posed to Roach. "We had our best start ever and Manny is really motivated for Shane Mosley,'" he said. "This may be the best training camp we've ever had." Pacquiao has been motivated partly because this is down time with his legislative responsibilities as a Congressman in the Philippines.
"A lot of people tell Manny that this is an easy fight and Shane has not looked good in his last couple of fights," explained Roach. "We're looking at Shane's last fight with Margarito, a guy that attacks, not those two runners that he had a little bit of difficulty with."
Roach went on to say, "Styles make fights and Manny has an aggressive style and that's why we have to be ready for this guy. Manny knows that and that's why we started out right off the bat not taking this guy lightly and working our asses off."
That alone should indicate something as to how serious this fight is for Pacquiao. Throw away, for the moment, that potential and must see encounter with Mayweather. Pacquiao is not looking ahead, and believe if you want that his next opponent is another fight with Juan Manuel Marquez.
"I can fight anybody," says Pacquiao when asked about looking ahead. And indeed, Mosley is an opponent that will not be taken lightly when it comes to looking ahead. Besides, they are not a step closer to a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight and the talk is, if the fight is made, it happens next year when all of Mayweather's legal issues are resolved.
Mosley has a great chin, and Pacquio has that power. So is this a risk for Pacquiao? Roach is not focused on the knockout and Pacquiao is prepared to go 12-rounds with Mosley, the future Hall of Fame fighter who has never been knocked out.
However, after listening to all the comments, when the fight was made, and last week during the media conference calls, you get the sense that Shane Mosley is a definite risk for Pacquiao. Mosley wants to spoil the plan and is prepared to go with the fast pace that Pacquiao will offer.
Mosley is hungry again and Manny Pacquiao brings that out in an opponent.

This is all hype,,, they said the same thing about Shane before he fought Floyd.... then Floyd promptly beat the crap outta him. I think Shane won 1 round. Maybe.
And Shane hitting 40 years of age is not brought up either.
Think of all the great fighters of the past at 40 years of age... does not look promising.
