Suicide predator ordered jailed on his victims' birthdays

The Minnesota predator who coaxed an 18-year-old Ontario girl into suicide will be forced to spend her and another victim's birthdays in jail each year for the next decade, a U.S. judge ruled Wednesday.

Judge Thomas M. Neuville ordered William Melchert-Dinkel to jail for 320 days for his part in coaxing Carleton University student Nadia Kajouji and Briton Mark Drybrough into suicide.

Neuville said Melchert-Dinkel will spend another 40 days in custody over the next 10 years - as returns to jail twice a year, for two days on each occasion, on the birthdays of his victims.

In issuing his unusual decision, Neuville said he believed Melchert-Dinkel, 48, was motivated by the "thrill of the chase" he felt while stalking suicidal victims and talking them into the act.

"He made the comment that he easily could have made it a (stiffer sentence) based on the severity of the case and how Melchert-Dinkel had little remorse for what he did," said Vanessa Eng, a spokeswoman for the Rice County Attorney's office in Faribault, Minnesota.

Drybrough hanged himself in 2005. Kajouji was a first-year Carleton student when she killed herself in 2008 by jumping into the Rideau River.

Canada and almost all U.S. states make it illegal to advise, assist or encourage another person to take his or her own life, prosecutions are rare.
