Shane’s Shame and the Million Dollar Game of Patty-cake; Magno’s Monday Rant

At some point, Shane Mosley’s trainer, Naazim Richardson had to sit down with Mosley, likely over some video footage, and lay down the strategy for the upcoming bout with Manny Pacquiao.

I doubt it sounded anything like this:

“OK, Shane…The world’s watching…We gotta get this right. Twenty Punches a round, constant back-peddling, and, whatever you do, don’t forget to high five Pacquiao as much as humanly possible. Got it?”

Shane Mosley threw more “high-fives” than meaningful punches during his twelve round non-effort against Manny Pacquiao Saturday night (35 “high-fives” compared to 22 power punches landed—Yeah, I counted), but let’s not put all the blame on Mosley for this $60 pay per view game of patty-cake.

There’s plenty of blame to go around.

First, there’s Bob Arum who, once again, chose roadkill as an opponent for his superstar thoroughbred cash cow. A younger, hungrier opponent would’ve at least given a more spirited effort than a 39-year old fighter who obviously saw this fight more as a pension fund raiser than an actual contest.

Then, there’s Pacquiao, himself, who insists that his promoter is the ultimate boss when it comes to who to fight, yet has overruled his promoter’s decision in the past when it’s been to his own benefit. If Manny is serious about only wanting to put on a good show, as he says repeatedly, then he should stop agreeing to fight human heavy bags and damaged goods.

But, ultimately, the lion’s share of the blame goes to Mosley, who could’ve put forth an effort, especially knowing that he was being disrespected, only brought in as an empty name for Pacquiao’s resume.

Yet, Mosley went down like a jovial buffoon, “high-fiving” Manny every chance he got and seemingly apologetic for anything that might’ve actually caused his opponent harm.

You’ll never find me calling a fighter a coward– writers who do that obviously have no respect for the sport and deserve a twelve round beat-down from those they brand as “yellow.” However, Mosley’s performance certainly can be labeled as disrespectful to the sport and to those fans who paid their hard-earned money to attend the event or watch it at home via pay per view. On the grandest stage of all and with the world watching, Mosley took the money and ran.

And it really was a shame that Mosley didn’t come to put forth an effort on Saturday night because the world-rattling upset was certainly within reach.

Pacquiao was tentative and uncomfortable, even with a shot fighter in front of him and absolutely nothing being thrown in return. The slightest movement and defense on Mosley’s part had thrown Pacquiao off and almost completely handcuffed his usual frenetic style.

But no punches were forthcoming. Mosley was unable to pull the trigger or just unwilling to deviate from the script that was written from the very moment Pacquiao chose yet another tired, damaged victim on which to affirm his “greatness.”

In last Monday’s Rant, I made the bold prediction of Mosley via tenth round TKO and I will gladly eat crow. It isn’t the first time that I’ve been wrong and it won’t be the last, but I want to go on record as saying that my prediction was contingent upon a Shane Mosley who still had an ounce of professional pride and actually cared about his legacy.

It would be best for “Sugar” Shane to take his last big pay day and walk away from the sport because I doubt he’ll ever be able to fool the fans into believing in him again.

All great fighters eventually reach the end of the road, but few have done it quite as cynically and as passively as “Sugar” Shane did last Saturday.

After the worst spectacle ever displayed by both on ppv boxing, Shane became a spokesman for the upcoming Mayweather/ Paquiao fight. He said Pacman hits harder but Floyd is stronger, faster and more technical. It seems that the spectacle was carefully prepared for this purpose, so he can become an expert in public relations. For this he was granted the biggest pay day of his extinct career.

Well after this display of patty cake shane the shame mosley wont be seeing another ppv so he is better off retiring.Pac had the chance to impress us all with a knockout.I did not see much of a beating on shane compared to margarito and cotto.Pacquiao looked slow admited by him and he also said he had leg issues which I found strange because he has no need to offer excuses.Weight issues?Although he had a good fight it was not his best offering.Maybe this is a good thing as it may lure the big fight to finally happen.Jmo

"Magno's Monday Rant"

At least he is honest and admits to needing to eat crow this morning. However objective he wants to be (and he tries hard) one cannot separate his opinion from his leanings: he predicted a 10th round TKO in favor of Shane. After the fact, he now calls Shane "roadkill". His writings went downhill after that losing whatever "objectiveness" was attempted. Then he goes on to "seek blame" - Arum, Pacquiao, finally, his boy-Shane Mosley, promoting the idea that Pacquiao should seek out "hungrier opponents".

He forgets that Pacquiao's conquests of the last three years have raised the bar for what is to be "great excitement" in boxing. Anything short of explosion in the ring is below par. Pacquiao/Mosley is certainly below par - but that is based on what Manny Pacquiao has set as new levels of entertainment in boxing.

Manny's English is at flyweight level. Hehehe! Being lost for words to a tough question, he was candid about how he felt and responded with honesty. You will read in several posted reviews after the fight that he was disgusted with Shane's reluctance to engage and that Roach was pressing him to KO Shane to which he replied: "Coach, I am trying!"

Exciting fights are where two boxers, not just one, want the outcome badly. Cases in point, Alvarado/Nahr. Nahr surrendered on his stool. Another: Alexander/Bradley - Devon, for some reasons showed little interest.

With Pacquiao/Mosley, there is little at stake for Manny, unlike fighting Margarito for another belt. Mosley, on the other hand had a glorious opportunity to make history but decided to quit after 3 rounds. Also, if you observe keenly, these two like each other and most likely are very good friends. Apart from Manny wanting to please the crowd, it became a difficult task when the hall-of-famer succumbed to the reality that time was no longer on his side.

But you are right, this may be the carrot to force loud mouth to come out of his cave. I don't see any other fight that would bring electricity in the ring with Pacquiao except a trilogy with Marquez. Even that may not equal any of Pacman's other explosive fights.

.....Or the fight before the "main Event"....That was exciting... You are right..Even if one is pressing as manny did..It is wtill a boring fight..Specially since Mosley still has the speed to evade.. Not punch anymore but evade.....

JORGE ARCE was on fire. He wanted that fight. Vasquez was also determined to keep his record with ZERO loss. They bombed each other throughout the 12 rounds. This fight was not about money; it was about pride which ARCE has and he knew that destroying the current champ earns him great respect. The first fight was opposite (ALVARADO/NARH), Narh resigned his job as a boxer by quiting on his stool.
