Posted By Chris Williams: According to boxing news from Steve Kim, the November 12th match-up between 37-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao will now go ahead, as Golden Boy Promotions won’t be matching the offer made to Marquez by Top Rank.
Bob Arum, the promoter for Top Rank, met with Marquez to get the details of the Pacquiao fight, which will be taking place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Golden Boy Promotions, the previous promoters for Marquez, had the right to match the $5 million offer made to Marquez by Top Rank plus the $10 million for a rematch.
However, with the catchweight of 144 pounds that Arum had put in the contract for the Pacquiao-Marquez, in addition to the big money Marquez was guaranteed, it made it difficult for Golden Boy to match this offer because they don’t have a huge star near that weight.
This is good news for Pacquiao and Marquez fans, because they’ve been waiting for three years for this rematch to happen and now it finally is taking place. The only question is whether Marquez is too old now and too small to beat Pacquiao.
With the fight taking place at 144 instead of a weight nearer to Marquez’s 135, it gives Pacquiao a huge advantage over Marquez. But this is the best that Marquez can get. I suppose he should be happy that the fight isn’t taking place at the full 147, because they could have done with him.
Giving Marquez a tiny advantage with the weight being dropped to 144 probably won’t be nearly enough for him to win the fight. For him to have a reasonable chance of winning, the fight would have to be at 135 or close to it. Pacquiao is far too big for him now and without giving Marquez a nice catchweight handicap, which Pacquiao has benefited from in the past while fighting for major titles at welterweight and junior middleweight, Marquez doesn’t have a chance. He’s too old and too small now. He needs the handicap like Pacquiao has had going for him in some of his fights against fellow Top Rank stable fighters.

Now we'll be able to see the difference between Manny now and then. Marquez will be the judge of who can be the probable winner of the mega fight we all waiting for. About time things get even for the other guys.

Ya know... i think it will be a closer fight than people think..... Marquez hits hard no matter what weight he is at.. the question is how he can take a bigger Manny's shots.
Marquez will go down fer shur.. lets see if he can get up like he did before.. he seems to fight better after he gets up. He has staggered Manny before, at a higher weight he
should be able to hurt Manny again. I think it will be give and take.
Considering Manny's clunker vs Shane, I do give Marquez a chance. But not a very big one. I think to win, he will have to knock Manny out.
Manny too busy to win a decision from him.
I will pay to see this one. Hope the undercard is worthwhile.
I do go on record as picking Manny to win this one. Probably by knockout. But not without taking some big right hands from Marquez.
I did see Golden Boy gave this bout its blessing. So,,, lets get it on!!!!

Finally!!....the match I've been praying for the last three years is a Reality!
Here's a chance for Manny to redeem his fans after his last mediocre bout with Mosley, and as much as I love Marquez for his warrior spirit, I agree He's definitely on the losing end of this one; Manny will come at Him on full throttle to make a point and finally put closure (and shut Marquez up ) once and for All. This is the bout that should have had happened two years ago while Marquez was still Hot ( and younger ). I just hope Marquez doesn't wind up knocked out and at least holds up ( If the ref lets It ) till the last round and leaves the ring with his chin up as The True Mexican warrior He Truly is! There is no way in Hell I'm missing This One !!

Well, well, well! I had to blink my eyes a few times to see who wrote this article and it is quite a shock. Is this the same Chris Williams? The guy who loves to critique the Pacman?
Well, give credit where credit is due. Here is a toast to a "new" Chris Williams"!
I agree with Rudee and the others, Marquez will not run from Manny and that is what will make this fight exciting. Unfortunately, I can't see this fight lasting 7 rounds. When it is all over, and I have written this many times.....Pacquiao will announce his retirement.
The guaranteed "return bout" (in the event of a loss by Pacquiao) will be mute. There will be no return bout.

If he retires he would leave the biggest question in the history of boxing unanswered. The unbeaten boxer will be pound for pound king for ever. I concur, Ramon, money will make him dance.

In his own words he said: "The biggest fight of my life is to eliminate poverty in my country." That is how serious he is as a statesman.
Besides, his numerous achievements have already elevated him way beyond the stature of Floyd Mayweather - in boxing or outside the ring; as a boxer and as a human being. He has re-written history books many times over during his boxing career of the last few years.
To the contrary, the lingering doubts will remain on Mayweather's book. The glitter in his ZERO loss has dimmed. Few people care less of his unbeaten record. Fact or fiction, what people will speculate is how scared he is of Pacquiao.
By the end of 2011, his networth will be way over $100 million - P40 billion pesos, multiplying in staggering amounts each day. To assume his actions to be motivated by greed (for more money) is to tarnish his character and solid reputation. Besides, I would not bet against two people: Jinkee and Madam Dionisia.

Interesting posts... but Eni,,, you are wrong about Marquez avoiding a rematch with Manny. At that time neither one really wanted another fight. They both absorbed tremendous
punishment in the 2 fights they had... Manny grew,, Marquez made lotsa dough staying where he was at. They made lotsa money beating up other people, and not each other.
Kinda like Leonard and Haglar... after their fight neither one wanted a rematch. Watch the fight and you will see why.
Now marquez and manny are pretty much out of options... Marquez is the king of his division... Manny of his. Marquez the only fighter to really stand up to Manny.. so its logical
to match them up again. Again,, I reiterate, this is not so much Manny as it is Roach. If i remember correctly, Marquez never even went to Manny's corner after the fight to
talk or congratulate him or just to say "great fight" Instead he mouthed off about how he was robbed. Which he wasn't.
Roach has never forgotten that and wants to shut Marquez up good! (besides make lotsa dough) This fight will draw huge audiences all over the world.. Mexico, Philipines, Mex/Americans. Central and South America and of course the U.S. Millions and millions will be made. Thats why Golden Boy stepped aside... they no doubt got tossed a bone.
In conclusion, some of the shine has really come off the Mayweather vs Manny bout. Both are getting older now.. Floyd has not fought in a year.. and before that, quite a while.
Manny is fighting 2 times a year now... and if the fight with Marquez goes as the other 2 went, he will have taken some heavy blows... win or lose.
I am in total agreement with Aqua on this one... I think Manny will call it quits after this fight with Marquez.. He did not want the fight but I see it as his last hoorah for the public
and for Roach, who's condition is deteriorating rapidly. Kinda a going away present for Roach. "I will kick Marquez ass just for you my friend"
Manny has tons of dough... he does a Indian casino commercial here around my area... hear he got a sweet million for that. Just for a 30 second commercial.
So in other words, Manny does not need the money. What he has now will go a long long way in the Philipines. Plus again, he wants to be and stay in politics.
He loves show business... so in reality, he does not need to take blows for money. He can make that in many other arenas in life.
He has put his stamp in the boxing business. Noone would blame him one bit for bowing out... I wouldnt. And I think Floyd would be super happy to see him go.
My Filipino friends come and go to the Philipines,,,, and they all agree that Manny is close to calling it quits. From what they say,,, he does not have that fire
in the belly anymore and wants to become fully committed to politics. Hopefully become president some day...
I wish him the best! Lets take care of Marquez first!!!
I posted I think Floyd and Manny will get together late next year.... IF Manny does not retire after the Marquez fight. Big IF!

If his dream is, to take his people out of poverty, he needs a lot more than what he has. Unless, he is planing of taking money from the rich and give it to the poor if he is elected president. In order to help others you need all you can get, so is there any other way of getting it?
So in other words, Manny does not need the money. What he has now will go a long long way in the Philipines.

the rematch clause will give marquez a push - he will rake a lot of money if he win. this will be a good fight, marquez will die for it

Fib,,, I dont mean Manny will get people out of poverty with HIS money. I mean if he gets elected to a high position.. he can work to create jobs and raise his country from poverty level to a higher level.
I mean create jobs like we do in US.... build bridges, build roads, maybe power grids, be more indepent by creating jobs and building their infrastructure.
Filipinos are very hard working people. They need help from thier politicians to become more self dependent. The country has been thru many catastrophe's.
They really need a good rebuilding. This is exactly what Manny wants to help with.
Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos robbed the country blind!

Wow, you are getting me so proud of you, Rudee! You are not only a boxing connoisseur, you also know your math....er.....physics.....ah..... geography? No......History! :)
Eni, the "rematch clause" is standard in many contracts. It is like dangling a carrot!
Your knowledge of the country's history and its people is remarkable. Decades ago, the Philippines had a President by the name of Ramon Magsaysay. He exemplified the kind of person who cared for the people like Manny. He would ride a public bus instead of an armored car to get to places he would visit. He died in a plane crash.
One of Manny's projects is the establishment of a hospital in his hometown. He was successful in having this passed. Like many third world countries, the Philippines is recipient of multi-billion dollars for economic funding and infra-structures. If these funds are used as intended, they could create employment, stimulate capital spending, and raise gross national production through more efficient industrial, technical, and agricultural processing. Most of all, it would raise per capita income. That is how poverty could be alleviated. The only thing MANNY PACQUIAO could effectively accomplish is to hold firm on his belief and become a steward of these resources. He does not have to single-handedly earn money to pour into his country's economy.

Ha ha ha..... thanks Aqua,, I am kinda like a Jack of all trades,,, and master of none.
Bet ya didn't know Cesar Chavez did not only help unionize and create better working conditions for the Mexicans in Ca ... BUT for the Filipino farm workers too!
Little known fact.
Was talking to my mailman today... I expressed our opinion that Manny wants to retire after Marquez, he said Manny's wife is very concerned about
his health, she wants him to retire NOW! He says the main reason he is continuing with Marquez is for Roach. (as we surmised)
Guy says Manny's wife keeps a tight hold of his purse strings... however, he says Manny has a lot of leeches hanging on him in the Philipines. (gives away lotsa dough)
This is the fight I would rather seen instead of the fight with Mosley. I still have a problem with this fight though. It has more to do with Marquez then it does with Manny. My problem is that Marquez is too small. I think if they were fighting at an equal size, it would be a good fight, even at Marquez's age. At Manny's current size, he hits much harder and can take a punch much better. This will be a big problem for Marquez. Marquez has been saying that he has been wanting this fight for sometime now, but he hasn't done anything to put himself in a better position to be more ready for this fight. If he tries to put on the weight now, his body won't be conditioned to it. It is going to make him slower, probably rob him of some power, and rob him of his endurance. He should have been preparing himself for this fight long ago by moving up in weight classes. That would allowed him go get a fight or two at a higher weight class and would have helped him condition his body for the extra weight.
Since Marquez didn't do any of that, I see this fight being a blowout. Sure Marquez is a warrior and will try, unlike Mosley, but the size difference is going to be way too much for him. I will even say that odds are, Manny will either get a KO or TKO because of it.

Sure, we discuss about boxing at this forum but what adds flavor to these posts are insightful thoughts and comments beyond what happens in the ring. I appreciate reading about Chavez, Arguello, Cotto, etc. not just about their boxing conquests but also their accomplishments as individuals. Hence, I enjoy every little tid-bit you share with us, Rudee.
It has been said by many that legacy in boxing or in any other contact sport is cemented by the conquest of a great adversary. Muhammad Ali needed Joe Frazier (and Thrilla in Manila). Anderson Silva needed a Chael Sonnen who dominated their UFC match for 23 of 25 minutes rounds only to lose on a triangle leg lock with less an 2 minutes to go. Sugar Ray Leonard needed a Tommy Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran to rise above every one.
Manny Pacquiao needs to settle any lingering doubt with Juan Manuel Marquez to legitimately rise beyond all his accomplishments; to be truly crowned the greatest little boxer to ever live... just as Amir Khan needs to settle score with Columbian Breidis Prescott to become the next best P4P.... just as George St. Pierre wants something better than Jake Shields... perhaps he needs Anderson Silva!
This is why Mayweather is being left behind the gravy train. His 41-0 does not include one great adversary's resume. He was not a convincing winner in his bout against Oscar dela Hoya. He does not have a "nemesis" which is why people want him to fight Pacquiao. That light (his own "Frazier", "Hagler", "Duran") is starting to flicker and dim and soon it will die.

Well said gentlemen. I enjoy reading everyone's opinion and the thoughts behind them. I try to throw in as much as I can with my limited knowledge and with hearsay.
Sometimes we get a little off course, but when we do we try to keep it interesting for everyone... the important thing is to respect each others opinion.
I for one love reading about things that will enhance my knowledge. I love to say... "wow,, I didn't know that"
Time will tell with Marquez and Manny. Either way,, it will be a tough fight for both of them. Both hit very hard and both don't take a step back.
Don't take Marquez that lightly... He is one tough Mexican fighter. I am curious as to what each fighter will weigh at fight time.
Already licking my chops!!!
