Is it possible to put a DN or DT lnb on a 39 inch dish and be able to pick up signal such as sat AMC 9?

No, you'll need to use a linear LNB. DN/DTV/Bell are circular polarized, so their LNBs won't work.

There are threads that give you a way to modify circular provider LNB for use as linear LNB--there is often a plastic piece that can be snapped off in the waveguide of the LNB that does the circular to linear conversion (though in some of the LNBs I'm not really sure of where that plastic might be or how they are doing the conversion but they do have to do it somehow with the same trick of how some plastic properties react with microwave signals). You also have to modify the LNB LO frequency to be closer to the 10.75 GHz range rather than the 11.25GHz that the providers use--that can be hard to do with the DRO pucks that are used in those LNBs. Cheaper and easier to shell out 5-20 $ US for a linear LNB IMO.
