In two consecutive days, we saw two senior boxers in the ring - ROY JONES JR. and BERNARD HOPKINS. One lay unconscious in the 10th round; the other victorious with two title belts claiming an unprecedented feat of being the oldest at 46 years of age to hold two world titles eclipsing George Foreman's record.
Before we go into specifics as to the differences between these two boxers, it is interesting to note how significantly fit Bernard is compared to George Foreman when he fought Moorer.
And now for some scrutiny about JONES and HOPKINS.
1) Looking at their physique, it is clear how Hopkins has maintained great conditioning. He did not appear to have an ounce of fat. JONES on the other hand look bloated and out of shape. Before the Pascal fight, there was a bruhaha with Pascal accusing Hopkins of "cheating" (with PEDs). Nothing else has been said and done about that. Hopkins look as good as he did 15 years ago.
2) Jones fought a younger and stronger hungry boxer with far greater stamina. While he asserted himself in the early rounds, it was clear that he no longer has what it takes to handle the demands of brutal 30 minutes of fighting. It was only a matter of time.
3) Hopkins is a sly fox. He employed every psychological tactic to his advantage. He has Pascal's number even during their first meeting. Jean Pascal lost his head even before the fight. Just like the first meeting he went in like a raving mad dog swinging for the fences. When he got nailed by a stinging right straight by Hopkins, he was psychologically beaten.
4) Pascal is a raging raw boxer with power to knock down a totem pole. Hopkins is as slippery as an electric eel who knew how to slip out of danger...and he did. Pascal went in with a hot head - just as Hopkins wanted it.
Therein lies the reason for the two different outcomes for two senior boxers.
