Problem with Wii controller

Just purchased a Wii system and one of the controllers does not light up and seem to turn on. I have checked the battery compartment and battery condition and all is good.
Do I need to reset anything prior to the last resort of returning to the store

There is a red button inside the battery compartment. It's a sync button.
